Turbo wash..

Post by doslaur »

Ok I already bought and got a turbo wash started. I've been reading alot through this website, only to find that, not many people really like the turbos. I have read that off flavours and tastes are attributed from using this turbo. Did I mess up using this wash. I intend on cooking it tommorow, but it is still cloudy. Do I have to wait until it clears up? I have one more packet of turbo, that I will probably split in half, as I have read in some other threads. To cut down on off tastes. Will the alcohol that I get tommorow even be worth drinking? I'm using a reflux. If the spirit has an off flavor, can it be redistilled, or will it redistill with the same off flavours, being it is a turbo? I'm in the learning stage, so any info is appreciated.

I have distilled one batch of 'Alcotec 48' Turbo wash. I am yet to do a wash that is highly recommended by most here, which is the All Bran wash (You can find this in the 'Tried & True Recipe' section).

My still is pretty good (It better be for how much I paid) and it came out 95% pure. There was a certain harshness to it, and not even using essences would dull the harsh alcohol taste. I've been told to air out the spirits fresh out of the still by 'Braz'. I will be trying this with my next batch, which unfortunately is a Turbo wash (Sorry guys). I start my All Bran wash next batch.

Some real good advice I have received, is from 'Braz', and that is to get a few (a lot) of 500ml jars, and take cuts. Once you decide which cuts you are going to keep, from smelling & tasting, you then place a coffee filter over the top and leave the alcohol to air out for 24 hours. [For the actual advice see my thread http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... =4&t=16222

EDIT: Sorry, I didn't answer some of your other questions.
If your wash is still cloudy, I would let it sit for a few more days and see if it improves. You want to get this wash as clear as possible. If you are impatient you can buy a clearing agent from the 'Still Spirits' range. As far as taste, I found that people enjoyed drinking the pure moonshine more than the flavoured crap. And most REALLY did enjoy the 95% shine, straight. It is drinkable, and even being as harsh as it is.. It still beats some of the stuff I have bought over the years. Although you probably are aware of this, the next day is a whole lot better than it is with store bought stuff.

I hope this was helpful, even if it was just passing on someone else's advice.

All is not lost, doslaur...

You can still run the turbo wash but you will just need to do a bit more work and pay closer attention to your cuts... Make sure the wash has finished fermenting and then let it clear for at least a day or two before racking... Then you can either let it clear again or run it...

One option not mentioned here often is the fact that you can dilute the boiler charge in an effort to get cleaner spirits... As you have read, you can ferment at 50% strength... Well, that also goes for the distillation process as well... Sure, it may take multiple runs but each of those runs will end up cleaner... I think I'd rather do that than to run a full strength toxic turbo wash, dilute, and then run again, and perhaps again... The more water you have in the boiler to hold back the off smells and tastes, the cleaner your resulting spirits will be...

If you intend to use the rest of your turbo yeast just mix half strength washes with half the sugar and half the yeast... Then you won't really need to dilute the wash in the boiler unless you choose to...

Good luck...

My friend, serving alcohol at 95% is just plain irresponsible, let alone dangerous. It also does some pretty horrible things to your insides, so even if you hate your mates, have a thought for your tastebuds, you're going to need them for making cuts. I believe there is a thread around somewhere about the strongest proof you should drink, might be a good read for you.

I never served it to them. There were some 700ml bottles of it that I was yet to dilute in the kitchen, and as I was out starting the fire, they decided to take a swig or two. They knew full well what it was, and I have advised people against it. Army boys just don't listen. And I have read that thread Kiwistiller, thank you for your concern :D . I never drank the pure shine.

Cheers,

Try never to keep anything beyond 100 proof in the reach of guests who dont know any better. It will save you A LOT of pain and grief.

Well in that case, if you care about your mates, maybe not leaving 95 in the kitchen is a good idea. Diluting to 40% ASAP and not leaving 95 lying around anywhere is also an option. Bugger, tell em its poison if you have to, you wouldn't be lying :roll: .
Anyway, I called your attention to this not due to concern for your mates, that's your problem, and its on your conscience if something happens. On the other hand, probably not so great to be recommending that sort of behaviour to other members - especially if you are aware of the problems it can cause.

People do die of ethanol intoxication, and with well made 95% from a good wash, educated adults even won't know what they're drinking (the stuff is practically flavourless and odorless after all), let alone kids, teenagers, whoever else might be able to acquire a bottle from your kitchen.

Here is what happens to your body at various blood alcohol concentrations:
* 20–99 mg/dL - Impaired co-ordination and euphoria
* 100–199 mg/dL - Ataxia, poor judgement, labile mood
* 200–299 mg/dL - Marked ataxia, slurred speech, poor judgement, labile mood, nausea and vomiting
* 300–399 mg/dL - Stage 1 anaesthesia, memory lapse, labile mood
* 400+mg/dL - Respiratory failure, coma and death

700ml of 95% would kill most adults (functioning alcoholics and maybe the morbidly obese aside), let alone smaller people (kids, women). It is well past that 400mg+ point.

If I keep 95% (which is very rare - only for strong macerations for essences etc), it's in a metal trunk under lock and key, labelled clearly as poison. I strongly encourage you to take up this practice before someone gets hurt. I also strongly encourage you not to tell other members how much your dumbass mates like 95%.

No one likes seeing someone go to hospital. It happens. Don't let it happen to you or anyone you care about.

I didn't mean to 'cause such an issue by my previous statement. I was merely just trying to point out that the essence only made it worse for my harsh alcohol. I wasn't encouraging anyone to drink dangerously high proof alcohol, and I did not think to state this in my post, for that I apologize.

It wasn't diluted because I wasn't sure what it would be used for yet, and I don't have many bottles laying around. I will be picking some up more up later this week.

Prior to the party starting I told people what it was, and that it's dangerous to drink, also that it eats at plastic at that proof. I accept no responsibility if they choose to drink it when I leave the room after I advised not to drink it. Everyone else didn't go near it after being told about how dangerous it is.

Thank you for your post.
