Plastic Bottls

Post by 'SideWinder' »

Hi all,

I'm still new to distilling, although I've just left Turbos and made a All-Bran wash.

I've been to my local brew store and trying to find 1.125L bottles (I use the essences), the only bottles they sell are the P.E.T plastic bottles and Wine/Beer Bottles (which aren't 1.125L). I thought plastic was a no no for alcohol.. but he says it's perfectly fine. Just wondering you opinions. Also, I'm making bourbon and wanting to age/oak it. Will sitting in a plastic bottle be alright?

I have tried the Search function. But Plastic Bottle says it's too common.

Exacly what I thought. Just wanted another opinion.
I'm trying to get my hands on original spirit bottles but you wouldn't believe how hard that is!

What do you want to do with them and what is the %of alcohol you intend to store in them? For fermentation bottles 15%-20% is pretty standard. For High proof 40% + I don't do it. Don't know if it's unsafe but I don't know that it is.

Hi Deutscher,

I too use the essences and lately found it easier to use 2 litre Flagons (which I pick up very cheaply at a wholesale food importer place).

I initially measured out 1.125 l of water in a measuring jug and poured it into a flagon. Then I marked the level the water came to with a black non-removal marker. When Mixing I then add everything to the flagon and add water till it gets to the line. The wider opening on the bottle and the extra airspace in the bottle allows much easier mixing too.

The flagons might be good for the bourbon aging too, although I haven't tried it.

I generally have 40% sometimes 50% alchohol in them.

I've about had enough with all the talk about plastics for one day...

It's been explained that some plastics are lined for temporary storage of alcohol... However, the more air that the lined plastic is exposed to, the faster it will begin to bio-degrade... Therefore, plastic bottles should be left to the liquor manufacturers/stores who assume that once a bottle of cheap liquor is sold that it will be consumed before there is an issue and the bottle begins the bio-degrade process...

I'll try looking around. Just never really come across empty glass bottles apart from those H20 bottles. I'll see what I can scope.

If you have a glass recycling or bottle return shop around, they usually let you buy glass cheap, especially if it for your new "wine/beer" making hobby :ewink:

Otherwise, sorry I could not help.

I don't do that, I use them for fermentation 20%ish max but I don't know what high proof does to plastic. With synthetics if I don't know I don't do it, that's my stance and I've been doing this for a bit.

Folks said tobacco was ok for a long time to......... Is it worth a few bucks?

Just brought a 750ml & 350ml glass Wine Bottles ($3 for both). Atleast this will still get me the 1.125L (It saves having left overs).

Also thanks for moving my thread to a more appropriate area. I wasn't thinking Safety.

The way to go in home distilling is glass bottles but about a week ago I was reading a big article that a lot of likker is sold in England in PET bottles cause many folks love to use a bottle in the pubs as an arm.

Anyhow I'm sure that those bottles will have an expiration date unless the glass bottles don't have.

Glass and Oak should be our aging material.

wine bottles work, if you want them cheaper see if there is a wine tasting club, many do not want to wash/remove labels so you can obtain cheap.

If you can't get the hookup from a bartender or some friends for bottles try an IKEA if you have one near you, I get jars from there to use for macerations and picked up some bottles on my last visit. The ones I got hold around 1.25L

Def go for the IKEA bottles. I was buying my bottles from Cheap As Chips but the IKEA bottles are bigger, cheaper and better quality. Only $1.50 last time I was there

Hmm reading all this got me thinking again. Here in Canada, well in New Brunswick anyway, hard liquor is sold in PLASTIC bottles. Now im not sure of what kind of plastic it is i'd have to check, but the only likker in glass bottles are the most expensive ones, and the ones from the states (Jim Beam, JD, Sailor Jerry spiced rum, and some more that im forgetting).

How can the industry be so inconsiderate when it's scientifically proven that some plastic even leach in water?? i can just imagine what it could do with high ABV likker....

I guess cheap likker does go fast especially in cities where bums drink all of the stuff regularly, but where im from, which is a pretty small town, not much people drink the fancy stuff in the glass bottles.... And those of them who aren't heavy drinkers like I am will end up having these plastic bottles on their shelves/bars sometimes for over a year.

Money talks bullshit walks as usual i guess.... friggin big corporations.
