What's the point?

Post by NewGuy »

Hey guys,
Maybe a dumb question, but what are we trying to accomplish with reflux?
Are we simply trying to get the distilate back down into the boiler to be revaporized?
Or is there something about the vapor passing thru the liquid saturated packing?

I do understand that doing it results in a cleaner, more pure and higher ABV product, just wondering about the process, is it the revaporizing or is there some magic in the counter flow in the packing

NewGuy, it sounds like a trip over to the parent site is in order... Refluxing is explained in several sections over there and this one is as good a place to start as any...

Not a stupid question Newguy, the parent site is a great resource for us stillers and I refer to it frequently, but sometimes a little reflux theory mixes with a little pot still theory and confusion sets in...

Thats what the guy's at HD are for, to help you through these parts, either by pointing you in the right direction or breaking it down for ya if things get tough...

Dont forget to take notes while your studying, they will prove very useful later on when your performing your first wash, run, cut...

Good luck on your way forward... :D

ps: Oh yeah, and take SC's advice, try an get the wife onboard,
its easier when SHE goes to the kitchen to get her latest new collander, large SS spoon and you dont need to ask...

Jeez I admire you blokes for suggesting to members to read. Every time I suggest it, all jeffing hell breaks loose (Victorians will understand Jeffing) usually from the same losers who know who they are. :|

Newguy, you will be well rewarded by doing as these brave fellows have suggested. Reading is the way almost all usefull knowledge is gained. :)

We all have different ways of communicating.
He means "if you dont have reflux, you wont be able to get a high alcohol content. If you choose to do it without reflux, you are going out on a limb."

Well at least I THINK thats what he means...;)

Luv ya Goose!

Goose eye speaks a pure language. Dilutin his words into plain english could be.....'refluxin or potstillin 4X are a waste of time and flavour if you are using fruit wash'.

Don't worry Henk. Most of us English speakers read Gooses post multiple times too.

You already know the essence of what Goose is refering to.

Recon Goose may have known some people that used a potstill a while ago. And they likely understood that a bit a reflux can help separate the alcohol more efficiantly.

That would mean that the stillmen could work more efficiantly. And that could translate to making it easier to spend more time with your family and perhaps also make it easier to feed your family.

He guys and especialy Goose,

I did not want to offend anyone, some people speak sofisticated, others common, but that doesn't say a word about the look of there heart :!: We all have the same color of blood. Difference comes in the taste of the blood. Some taste sweet, others bitter, and some cruel.
But this is all Off-topic.

I myself have never run a real reflux, did pot still runs, but always 3 to 4 times. I now have my ponu, and am very happy with the result.
