Greetings, batf...

You are correct, if you have the skills and wherewithal, building your own equipment adds a whole extra level of self-satisfaction - even if the first evolution isn't professional grade in appearance... Take your time, do your research, ask questions, and make an educated decision...

Good luck...

Hey Batf,
Welcome to the forum.I am also relatively new here and was in your boat for sure.I did make a small 1" reflux tower which did work pretty good but was god awefull slow :( Of course the when you first build one you say to yourself, " well, this one is big enough for my needs". Well after you make your first batch, you realize pretty quickly that you shoulda went bigger ! I was in that boat and with the price of copper around my parts it wasn't an option so I went ahead and pick up a tower from Brewhaus and am very satisfied with it.Works well for making a good spirit.Little tricky at first to get a good reflux going on, but after the first couple of runs you know where your heat and water flow should be.
That being said I'm still gonna build a slant plate in the future, just gonna pick up the copper and such a little at a time and maybe do it over the winter.I agree with Rad, making your own defintely makes you feel much better about your spirits.I remember when I ran the first batch off from my 1" column, I was freakin out that I made such good hooch! I invited all the guys over and we pretty much drank it all that night. No aging no nuthin! It was a good feeling for sure.
Either way you go just remember not to rush anything from fermementing, to building a new setup. Can be hard at first, but when you get a little stock built up you can then take your time and start making really good stuff :D Stay away from those Turbos ! Rad's All Bran Recipe has been working great for me, i highly recommend that one for a good wash that's easy and produces great results. You will find it in the Tried and True recipes section on the forum.
Good luck my friend and you are definately with good people here :D

thanks for the warm welcome guys.

ive been looking at yall builds, craftmanship for sure!

i made a worm from a roll of 1/2 copper tubing, and secured it in 5 gal bucket, practiced sweging and brazing a few joints of tubing

together, to get the feel for the build.

anyways i am glad to be here and thanks again.
