Roll your own ciggs

Post by Jetzon »

Anybody roll your own cigarettes?

Ive been rolling my own for about two years and I think its Much better tobacco. I can see what I'm rolling, and roll the right amount I feel like smoking. Its cheaper and I smoke less. After buying tobacco and filters it comes out to under 30 bucks a carton. I get More then 200 smokes out of a 5.2oz can of Drum. It comes with 200 papers and I always run out before the tobacco does. Next year I think I'm gonna try planting my own tobacco and see how that works out.
Any advice on growing tobacco would be most appreciated!

I rolled my own before I quite last year. Been rolling them by hand since I was a kid. I never did like a filter on my smokes so I figured buying them by the pack and tearing the filter off was kinda a wast.

Thing about rolling your own is that you have to find fresh tobacco, a lot of the hand roll stuff get stale sitting on the shelf.
Ideas are like rabbits. You get a couple and learn how to handle them, and pretty soon you have a dozen. John Steinbeck

I rolled my own for around forty years and grew some last year but stopped smoking before I used any of it. There is a heap of stuff on growing baccy on the net. Shit easy to grow and cure. I still have some in the shed which I forgot about until I read this. I must have a look at it for my smoker mates.

EDIT: Forty should read fifty nine years

Yea ive been reading about growing tobacco online and buying plants. If you can grow tomatoes you can grow tobacco. I have a huge garden that I really enjoy working.
Says its a great bug repellent too for the All natural no pesticide growers. I like the thought of doing for myself and learn to be less depended on stores. Hunt most my own meat, grow my own veggies, brew my own drink and be nice to grow my own smokes. Saves a lot in this bad economy.

I don't smoke anymore but I always objected to filters on environmental grounds. Do you know how long they take to degrade!!!
cigars and a water pipe were my toys. Anyhow self-sufficiency in any aspect is to be aplauded and tobaco is real easy to grow, cure and roll.

I used to roll my own, specially during those times when I was down on my luck. Damn site cheaper. I enjoyed blending in some pipe tobacco. You can only run it up to about half because pipe tobacco is so much moister. The thing I didn't like was roll your owns stain your fingers.

I quit smoking and started chewing. I'm going to get some tobacco seeds next year and see what comes up.

I found my seed from plants growing in the local hospital garden. You will get aroung 36,579,305,692 seeds from each flowe so one paket of seeds goes a long way. Many growers used to - and no doubt still do - grow several varieties and blend. I wish I hadn't stopped smoking as I was really getting into this.

I've always rolled my ciggies. Tailor made cigs always taste too dry and make me feel like crap the next day. I've also never bothered with filters and recon their better without. The only trouble is my missus smokes with me so I always have to roll 2 at a time when she's around, lucky im quick at doing it

No future smoking cigs. I smoked them for 19 years from when I was 15 to 34, one day I said f--- it. I'm now 39 and have never looked back...

gretschem, as an EX smoker I would have to agree with you. Personally I now find the smell of tobaco unpleasant, BUT I would have to support the grow your own principle.

If you can do it yourself, you should do so, whatever topic is being discussed.

I'm a quitter too, but Ramback from D&R was my favorite back in the day. You have to be thoroughly hydrated to enjoy a ramback smoke, but holy Trinity were they delicious. Loved 'em.

I planted dwarf golden hops about 3 years ago. They only reach 12 foot and I am quite far north, but in a good summer they cone well. Ornamental mostly, but in a year or two I will be picking for beer. :) PROLIFIC growth for a dwarf variety. Don't have space for standard hops.

Damn. I'm coughing my lungs out as I read this.

Haven't had a smoke in almost 20 years.

I used to smoke Erinmore Mixture and the odd White Ox pipe tobacco as a rollie. I used to put a piece of orange peel and a Kool Mint in the packet and leave it on the dashboard of the truck for a month or two. Now that made your head spin.
Used to play in a hard rock band for years. Always had a rollie hangin' out of my gob while on stage. Maybe that's why my sense of smell is shot.

Thankfully saw the light, but I do miss the rollies when I have a beer.

Started smoking way too young, 12 years old. Quit when I was 37, twenty years ago. My lung function has come back quite a bit and I don't miss it a bit. Took me 2 years to quit coughing, but I did finally. I do keep some tobacco around though, for bee stings. Spit on the tobacco and make a poultice and goober it on to the sting. Stuff is magic!

I rolled my own in WV back in the early 70s fresh out of the curing barn. Those were the best ciggs for sure!!!

Nice... I think I've missed the time to be planting them now, but next year I'm definitely planting hops.

I play semi professionally in a funk blues band. I 'm trained in jazz, so in this blues band I 'm shufflin' all night I love it.

I play with an ARIA award winning Rock n Roll hall of famer Guitarist on bass, and the the Lead guitarist/ vocalist is from San Antonio Texas but he lives in NSW Australia now. I'm very fortunate to be in this band ...

We play Hendrix, Stevie Ray, Howlin' wolf, just to name a few...

I roll my own, I get golden virginia from england and if im out Ill normally go for for drum (with a slice of potato in the pack to add moisture)

I am a finance manager at a pretty big new car franchise dealership and thus have to look the part, almost everyone when they first meet me trip out that someone in a suit who makes really decent money whips out a paper and pouch and twists one up faster than they can unwrap a fresh pack of marlbros.

Ive rolled since I was 17 and im 31 now so Ive had a little practice  Im also a completly cheap bastard who would rather do it myself than buy it, hence the still    I also do all they cooking and wrench on my own vehicles.

IMO its better for you than the readyrolled too, the amount of chemicals in the big brand cigs cannot be good for ya, filter or not. They put salt peter in to make it burn faster and as of last year now add another chemical to make it go out faster god only know what other shit is in that dry nasty mess they call tobacco......

Been rollin for 45 yrs,. Drum from Holland was my favorite, but can't get anymore. The rjr drum sold here is not the same. Read that the original was fermented in oak barrels. Been smoking organic last 5 yrs. and smoke less, enjoy more, and no coughs in the morning (was buying whole leaf). Grew my first crop this year (silkleaf) and but for a few screw ups turned out decent. Will be adding some mild burley next year. Good site is "howtogrowyourowntobaccodotcom" The alien hemp papers are good.

Goose- The sand lugs ain't to bad for us frugal folk. Smoke some right off the stalk and decent.

Got some organic silkleaf seed if anybody interested. Send a stamped envelope and will send-no charge.

Edit- That's "howtogrowtobaccodotcom"

I cant seem to roll a Good round smoke by hand. I use a tops or zig zag 70mm roller. I cant stand those cigarette shooters or what ever there called. Doesnt make a good packed smoke, at least for my taste.

pistachio_nut. I tried D&R tobacco and wasnt really impressed. I used to smoke Camel lights so I tried that ramback and the other Turkish tobacco they have. I tried like 4-5 of there blends and didnt find one that I really cared for.

I seem to buy Drum most but I do like American Spirit,Bugler "in yellow can" Bali Shag cant find anymore and Peter Stokkebye as a treat when I can find it.
Seems like store bought filtered cigs take Years to rot away, But Ive noticed the filters I buy "Premier" doesnt take near as long to rot away. I still have store bought butts in driveway but the premier seem to dissolve away pretty quickly.

Heres one site Ive found that sells seeds.. If you plant a few different types will they cross breed? changing the taste? Guess it doesnt really matter to much, I'll smoke'm any way

Used to roll, quit a while back though.
It aint hard to grow ....although sometimes the insects get into it ... I grow it out in the garden just for fun still... still have a dozen plants out there right now standin 5 foot tall, and blossoming to boot ...I recon the frost will be around soon though.

Bugs on the tobacco plants? I thought I read it keeps them away? Said something like its been used for years to help rid the lil critters. Guess I'll find out this spring.
How do you cut it up after curing it? I thought maybe a paper shredder might work. I have one thats pretty tight cut. Not as tight as the drum tobacco looks but close.
