hunters blues
first time i take out my m1a for a hunt this morning. got up at 430ish and walked out to my feeder. got up in my tree stand and loaded my rifle, i didnt let the bolt go home on its own...rode it into battery to be quite. my stand is 160 yards from my feeder, so i dont have to be ultra quiet. at 5, my feeder goes off....its still darkish but i can almost see ...i can see 3 or 4 deer feeding..i wait a few minutes till i can make out a rack. i pull the trigger....click...nothing....i removed the mag and ejected the round,....insert the mag and again...rode the bolt home....click....same shit, 4 attempts later before the deer figure something is going on and leave.
i get back to the camp and i reload, release the bolt and sure enough it fires and cycles...the problem was with me, riding the bolt home is a no go...
i did have my best bass day in my pond in a long time. i prob caught 10 bass in the 1 to 2 lb range in a hour or so. heres a pic of my lane shot and pond pic

Yea I blew a shot at a 2 point (back east that is 4 point) bow hunting that pissed me off big time. I guessed him at 40 yds and he was 50. If the arrow would have dolphined at all it would have slapped him. That thing grew horns out of his ass and took off in opposite direction. Now I have a model 7600 pump .270 with scope just waiting to get drawn here.

thx mr pumpman, alittle info on it, she left springfield factory in 78, in national match grade. after looking thru the 4x12 redfield scope in low light conditions yesterday, i wasnt impressed, hoping to upgrade.
mr az i never did do the bow thing, but down here they just ok'ed cross bows for legal hunting, was thinking on getting one. i dont have any rifle in .270, but i like the flatness of the trajectory.

After 20 years of handling semi auto and automatic weapons on thing I have learnt is never ride the bolt. Could have been worse, could have been someone at the other end with a weapon who had a round chambered looking in your direction looking thinking what is that movement down there..... he then goes holy shit....... weapon is leveled off one you and bang.
One thing with stories like this, it's a learning experience, I bet you never ride the bolt again
Nice looking M1A1, I saw a marine in Afghanistan carrying one a few years back. I would rather 7.62 than 5.56 over there considering some of the engagement distances.

Re: hunters blues
I went out for coyotes, my in-laws have sheep so got to keep population of coyotes down. I went out and was calling with wounded rabbit call and figured I would cheat with extra round in, 1 in chamber and 5 in the clip It didn't work couldn't eject shell after my bad shot. Coyote I could have hit it with the gun it was so close. Scared the hell out of me and was not ready for it especially that close. But I did nail one at 60 yards with 150 grain and messed its day up bad. I hit it in hind quarter spun it 180 deg with a 360 flip. I'd score it a 10 on difficulty but only an 8 on form. You couldn't even tell what sex it was.

Re: hunters blues
Never heard of "ridin the bolt" causing one not to fire. Just thought it might change the point of impact a little, from where normal bolt cycling POI would be. But even then probably wouldn't make a difference in deer hunting accuracy at that distance, target shooting maybe.
I will keep it in mind.

Re: hunters blues
Riding the bolt causes a lot of stoppages, it's why a lot of weapons have a bolt assist (M4, M16, steyr) bolt doesn't go fully home and it won't fire till the bolt is fully locked in.
Any machine gun I know of will have a stoppage if you ride the bolt. Probably not the case with a lot of civilian semi autos but it'ld be a problem with some of them for sure.

Re: hunters blues
These are not every year kills for me either, I lucked up and got to hunt in west Texas with a buddy of mine and found the biggest deer I have ever seen. They are at the taxidermist now.
