eye test

Post by batf »

went to have my home brew rated from another moonshinner, my first time there
(invite only) . i brought along likker washes made from korn, sweet feed, apple and turbo samples.
i filled up a few shot glasses, and before the first drink, the he would smell it then place his eye over the shot glass.....stating if it was posion he could tell...????? anyways..he liked shots of my sweetfeed at 120p. the turbo didnt pass the smell test, it wasnt even sampled.

just pulling my leg about the eye test or is there proof in it? thx

I think this might have some merit, I am going to do a run next week and see if I can tell the difference in the cuts. Just thinking about chopping onions and what that does to my eyes!

You'll figure out if I've fibbed when you do your own run, however I like the idea of a calendar girl in the bottom of a shot glass, might also do a secondary test to see if it magnifies the picture;)

Maybe your eyeball palette just isn't refined enough MM. :P :D No seriously, its my thinking that this is only gonna work on spirits fairly fresh off the still. After all thats why we air our spirits before making cuts. To allow the more volatile fumes (vapors?) to evaporate and dissipate before we get in there and burn our nose hairs. I think its precisely these volatiles that are going to give you that sting from the heads. Thus helping these commercial distillers to make cuts on the fly.

did the eyeball test on my run tonight. i'm convinced. i was pulling heads with LM, so they were pretty warm, and the sting was way stronger than when i was doing the cold tests after watching the "dirty jobs," but very shortly after the taste/smell of heads was gone...no sting. seems my eye might be more in tune than my nose and tongue.

Yep, the fresh, warm "fumes" really do work on the eye to tell us when we're in the heads and when we're out, but dammit kids, don't slosh it around! Don't get alcohol into your eyes. Just get a good seal between the shot glass and your skin, and within a second, your eye will tell you if there are heads still present. Your eye won't 'run', necessarily, but you will feel a sting.

Anyone still consistently doing this. I take big fore shots (600ml on 10 gal corn washes) and a lot of the heads are in there. I gave it a try and couldn't tell. It might have been that I was mostly throughout the heads.

I do the eye test when bubbling air through the product using a fishtank airator. The product is in a narrow necked bottle, so a srteam of vapours are flowing out the top and it's easy to hold my eye in the vapour stream. The reason for the bubbling is to blow off the last traces of high volatiles. This is 95% refluxed product after standing for two days and this is the hearts after the cutting. Anyhow, I can tell when the bubbling has done it's job by using the eye test in the vapour stream. At first the vapour stream is potent enough to smell...more a sting in the nose than a smell, but after a while my smell can't tell the difference, it no longer stings in the nose but the eye test says keep going a little longer.

The time spent bubbling depends on how well the cuts are made. If the cuts are severe then little bubbling is needed, but there is always a trace of high volatiles that can be got rid of in this manner.
