power is out

Post by Uncle Jesse »

Power is out and homedistiller probably won't be up too much longer! Big, big storm here.

On the bright side I'm hoping to sign up for third-party hosting today to start the transition to a faster and more reliable hosting service.

...man! it's been a HELL of a winter in the california foothills. we have lost power every single storm. we are definitely getting a whole house back-up genny installed this year. trees are falling down like pick-up sticks. we have a long, skinny, steep driveway, it snows so hard by the time i get it plowed, it's already covered again and impassible. crazy winter...DAMN YOU AL GORE!!!!

While I'm sure none of us want to dog Uncle Jesse about getting switched over, once the migration is completed we will see a lot less outages and will also be able to increase image upload sizing back to a level or greater viewing detail... We are definitely growing to the point where managed hosting is pretty much mandatory... But my hat is off to Uncle Jesse for sticking it out and providing the server for as long as he has...

And to anyone who can, please click on the Donate button at the bottom of the forums and show your appreciation... If you can, fine... And if you can't, we understand... We know that some folks can't even afford to pay attention, but no finger pointing from this guy... I live hand to mouth myself...

Glad the site is back online..... :)
I couldn't sleep last night and the site was down :( .
So I signed up for a free service that send me a PM/email when the site goes down and when it's back up and running.
The site is called uptimeauditor<dot>com but the funny thing is, Just now, when I pulled up the book mark to get
the name of the site, THAT site is down and not responding.
You couldn't make that shyt up... lol :)

When it comes right down to it you have to hand it to UJ, running a site like this off of a home server and getting any kind of reliability is an accomplishment.

On the weather, I had to throw chains 3 times this week. If you've never chained up a tractor trailer rig it's an experience every one should go through at least once, nothing like having a 4 wheeler go by you at 60mph when your standing on the white line.

can't imagine chaining up a big rig...no F*ing thanks. i'm all a bout the 4WD...not the one blowing by you on the white line, though RD...

when ever i leave the house when we have a snow storm, i roll around in my truck with a chainsaw, shovels, extra can of gas, and a big bag of salt... feels good to help people out of sh*tty situations because i know how it feels to be s.o.l.

don't get me wrong. i love winter, i love snow, i even love al gore!!! just got to get back to work so i can buy some more copper to check out the new top secret OD/samo design....

...and, i agree that UJ's effort self-hosting the forum is admirable, and we should continue to donate as we are able.

OK I have gotten hosting arranged and I'm in the process of setting up the new server. It's been slow going copying stuff off the old site to the new one but I'm mostly done. Today I hope to get phpbb set up and configured and working on the new site.

In the next couple of days we'll be doing the switch over. No doubt many of you won't be able to hit HD for a while when we change the IP address. It can take a while for the new address to get around the web. I hope to make this as seamless as possible.

The new site is faster AND cheaper per month so it's a double-bonus switchover.

Got a hosting service which provides FreeBSD so I'm happy and familiar with it and things should move along fairly smoothly.

We will let you know a day or so in advance before we cut it over so folks don't wonder what the downtime is.

Great news, Uncle Jesse... Here's an idea... Once you get ready to do the change over you could post the IP address of the new server for those with slow DNS propagation... If they have the IP address they will still be able to access the new server until their DNS propagates... As long as they hit this site to get the IP before the change over, that is...

I'm excited... :D
