Glass and natural corks. That's just me though.
Where has all the rum gone? . . .

+1 but if your talking long term you'll need to wax the corks or they will dry up and shrink and crack. Ideally you'd want to use charred white oak barrels...frozenthunderbolt wrote:Glass and natural corks. That's just me though.

I quite often melt beeswax and then dip the entire neck of the bottleSmokehouse Shiner wrote:+1 but if your talking long term you'll need to wax the corks or they will dry up and shrink and crack. Re: long term storage
How much do you want to store? A 5 gallon sank keg with a big cork stopper is good for bulk storage.
For smaller quantities you can't go wrong with glass bottles.

50ltr keg.
Then challenge yourself to fill it.
That's what I'm doing while waiting for my oak barrel

I use 1gal (4.5L) Glass Demijohns to age my shine...
Once color and taste are reached, I remove the oak and store in the same demijohn, labeled ofcoarse...

Samohon, how old are your demijohn's? I know they can date back to the 1700's in Europe, do you collect them, I think they have more character than the carboy's.Samohon wrote:I use 1gal (4.5L) Glass Demijohns to age my shine...

I really don't like large carboys for long term storage, if something like a earthquake hits then you just lost 5 gallons of shine, don't ask me how I know.

Glass gallons and coffee filter lids with a chunk or two of oak. Safely placed away from everything. Barrel proof. This is after the color and taste is right. Never got to 5 gallons in one go ... wonder if I ever will.
