Difference between heat sources?
Hi there,
Just reading up before I get into my first session.
I have a propane burner that I use to boil beer in.
Is this not suitable for distilling? Am I really running a bad risk?

To each their own and what the have access to, as for myself, I have the power to run high wattages so I use electric. I do have a couple of propane burners that I use outdoors, but electric is safer and fast if you can do it!

any open flame application when dealing with flammable substances runs a higher rick, but it is sited well for distillation. I use Propane

You want to make sure you don't have any leaks that could drip alcohol on the burner. Keep the distillate far enough away to prevent it from catching fire even if if your container spills or breaks or something.
You can be safe with propane, as long as you are careful. When you are setting things up take some time to think of anything that could go wrong with your setup.
Also, electric has its own safety concerns.. It is safer but you need to ensure that you are using a GCFI outlet.

Re: Difference between heat sources?
one simple safety tip.
If you collect in glass jars as many people do, just put them into a small pot to contain the contents in case anything breaks.
Ya know? Instead of having the jar sitting on the counter or table top, put a small pot there and put the jar inside it. Just a little extra insurance.

Good advise junkyard dawg, I do the same thing myself even though I run electric. Never can be to careful with this hobby!
Re: Difference between heat sources?
I always have my collection jar in a bowl or baking pan that can easily hold the contents of my collection jars, and then some...

+1 on the pan idea, I am in the process of switching from propane to electric.
