I have been working on my distilling and seem to be getting it down.
I use mostly Birdwatchers and when I run a batch it comes out like this.
out of a 27 l batch , making pint cuts. I through out the first 250 ml then the first pint is usualy 190 proof and you can slightly smell the heads, the next 5 pints go from 190 down to about 175 proof and smell and taste good, the 7th pint is around 165 proof and you can start really smelling the tails so I stop there, dump the head pint and the tail pint into a feints jug and end up with 2 quarts of really good stuff about 180-185 proof. does that sound about right?
does this sound right

You get what you get. But yeah, that sounds about right.
Re: does this sound right
swamper, I would run a little deeper into the tails if at all possible... Think about it, down at 33% almost one ounce in three is pure ethanol... All you need to do is add water and redistill to get it out... But with some reflux columns the proof drops off so fast that it's not worth chasing after an extra ounce or two when the time, heat, and cooling is factored in...
Re: does this sound right
you are correct Rad, the % drops off really fast after the 7th pint so I'm not sure if it is worth the extra effort
