High Fructose Corn Syrup HFCS

Post by Bardstown Road »

I am wondering if it would be advantageous to start buying these vs sugar. A 5 gallon bag cost me $21. The only thing it contains is 65% HFCS and 35% water. CocaCola started making these for the new freestyle machines. My problem is I am not sure how to convert my sugar#'s to liquid percentages once mixed. Whats water weight? 8#s per gallon? What percentage is 7#sugar to 5gal water? Anyone see where I am going with this?

Well, 65% of that 5 gallons is sugar and 35% is water...

That 5 gallons contains 44 pounds of sugar and 7 quarts of water for a SG of ~1.400...

A 4:1 Water:HFCS would provide a SG of 1.080...

At least that's how my math calculates it...

Not in its current form because it would be too thick and the SG would be too high for a common hydrometer... It would need to be proportionately diluted first and I'd start with a 4:1 dilution ratio and go from there...

No preservatives at all. On a side note, despite what you may have heard, you can ferment soda that has preservatives. I am doing it now. Here is more discussion on that. http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... 5#p7123415

You have to know someone who manages a restaurant and also has a Coca-Cola freestyle machine in their restaurant in order to get these. I happen to be a restaurant manager with a freestyle machine.

I am going to try 1.5 gallon lite kyro to 4 gallon water.Syurp weights same as corn sugar.I usually use 12 lbs corn sugar to 4 gallon water.1.5 gallon kyro close to 12 lbs.we'll see!

IIRC, percentage on HFCS labels tells you how much fructose is there and does not tell you the percentage of sugar. HFCS is already sugar by itself. So HFCS 65% tells you that it contains 65% fructose.

Filbrewer,

What are you saying exactly?

According to cokesmart.com one of these cases weighs 56.2# x .65 = 36.53#'s of sugar. Not really a cost saver.
