First Birdwatchers mash..

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.

First Birdwatchers mash..

Post by 07rangerfx4 »

Ok so i decided to make a 5gal batch birdwatcher sugar run and im still waiting in fermintation. I started it last week with a SG of 1.090. I just checked it and its at 1.060. Im using this as a sac run and was hoping it would have already worked off by now. I only used one packet of Fleischman's active dry yeast (7g) packet. Should I thow another packet of yeast in to get it done or just wait it out. Im used to using the red star yeast and it seems to work off allot faster.

Any help would be much appreciated

Did you follow the recipe closely - recommended nutrients, sugar to water ratio, etc.? Did you maintain a good temp? Is the PH OK? Did you aerate before pitching the yeast?

You didn't pitch a lot of yeast. There's the possibility something (bacteria) took over the yeast before they propagated to a point of dominance.

Everything is spot on, its just slow. I followed the recipe to a T. I used my mixing spoon to aerate it making allot of bubbles and then pitched the yeast. Nothing different than when I make beer all the time. The only thing I done differently this time was use a different yeast. Im used to using Redstar in almost all of my beer mixes.

The only thing that I can think of is I didn't pitch enough yeast,

No you didn't. I'll answer your question with a couple of questions:

a) How much yeast does the recipe call for?
b) Did you reduce the amount of yeast in the correct ratio to the amount of wash you made?

(*hint* - 225 grams divided by 4 = 56 grams)

Get the wash temperature up to 75F/24C - 85F/30C if it isn't already... Few yeasts like cooler temperatures, especially bakers yeast...
