Hello from Cambodia
Hello.
Im'a stiller virgin,
but hopefully thats soon gonna change.
im A westerner living in Cambodia,
surrounded by people who couldnt
care less about health and safety,
some of you guys eyes would pop out if
you could see the way they make
moonshine around here.
Some people I know are hardcore
alcoholics drinking a liter or more
of this stuff every day.
I want to make some stills
and start making some quality drinks
for me and my friends.

Re: Hello from Cambodia
Welcome!!
Don't know much about Cambodia or their laws (if any).
Wouldn't want to get your head cut off for making likker.
Also, what about material availability ..Please don't say rice (lol).
Anyways, research, study, and learn until you have your goal/plan figured out ..
Good Luck, and By God Be Safe!

Welcome. I've done a couple rice runs and have one in my near future- makes a good drink. Bet it's cheaper for you.

Just had a friend come back from a visit there. She brought back some cool stories.

Welcome! Youre at the right place. Raw materials vary wildly, even across the states from one end to the other. Very curious to hear about your stillin adventures with whatever starchy stuff is available there. Youre biggest challenge may be finding a source of enzymes to convert the starch, (malted barley or lab based produced enzymes), perhaps koji is more readily available since youre in Asia.
Cheers!

Re: Hello from Cambodia
What do they use to make the 'shine there; if they are making a high proof 'shine, you should be able to use the same ingredients. Their ingredients but using clean water, an efficient still design, proper distilling procedure and good cuts would surely net a far superior product than what they produce.
I would make damn sure what the legal ramifications could be; I understand Cambodia is a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to be a Westerner in a Cambodian prison.
Good luck

Re: Hello from Cambodia
Big thanks for the warm welcome everybody.
They dont make any high proof that I know of.
its a rice wine called srah solh.
highly toxic and has killed many. very bad rep locally
I probably wont have to do any fermenting because drinks here
are soooo cheap, $1 for a 700ml bottle of Mekong whisky at 31% alc.
http://www.travelblog.org/Photos/1226695
or I might go for rice wine shine at 25 cents a litre at about 30% alc.
the trouble is, the shine is often made in cheap aluminium stills where
it would not surprise me if they use lead solder & car radiators
im gonna try and find a distiller who knows what hes doing and check
his prossesses.
Iv been told of a man who makes shine for 75 cents a litre if i can see
its made properly i'll use it for my wash,
if not Mekong wash it is.
it would probably work out cheaper than making a sour mash (from rice )
because the fuel costs of the stripping run.
though iv heard that they run the boiler from rice husks,
must be pretty cheap, i'll look into it, but to start with I'll
just use gas bottles.
I intend to make very high strength neutrals
via a double run through a Boka, or a tripple/quad run through a pot
I think I can get away with running flamable wash?
Because i'll be outside in a paddy field, and I wont care that much
about it if the still burns down, i'll just build another
i dont even know if its illegal here,
I know of two destillers in a 1km sqr, one of them just next door,
200 meters away.
they all have the stills outside within full view of the roads.
if the police shake us down it cant be more than $10 a month.
plus I wont be running the still alone i'll train others how to do it.
Anyway, I cant wait to taste alcohol with hardly any methanol in it

Re: Hello from Cambodia
Pretty good plan ..Although you want to try and get some stainless and/or copper ..At least some scrubbies ..Will any locals get upset when you make a better 'drop' than they do?
Just be careful and Good Luck!

Re: Hello from Cambodia
building materials and tools is the biggest challenge. but iv been thinking,Pretty good plan ..Although you want to try and get some stainless
and/or copper ..At least some scrubbies ..
and have a plan to make a very cheap build, using some old traditional tactics.
not many people will even taste it, just me and my friends. Will any locals get upset when you make a better 'drop' than they do?
Plus the cost per litre will be maybe 20 times what they offer so
i couldnt sell it if i tryed, wont be putting anyone out of business.
sure thingJust be careful and Good Luck!

So, Still,
Do you have a way of recieving packages from the states? In some countries, if we send things to people, the material gets' intercepted often.
Can you get, like a FedEx package?

Re: Hello from Cambodia
the SHTF along time ago MB, im a lost cause
fedex in this country is a sick joke and very expencive
and they couldnt even deliver my letter. i had to go to the capital
and collect it in person. they were all dressed up like postmen
but delivering packeges, defo not their thing.
dhl might be ok, iv actually seen one of their vans in my city, & cheaper to
the only thing i might consider having sent would be a condenser, they wouldnt
know what it was for.
if i could find 10ft of 1/4in copper pipe id make it myself
but iv never seen and copper pipe here, everyone uses pvc.
I'll have to keep asking around for building suppliers

Re: Hello from Cambodia
Is there any way we can send you enough copper, stainless, and corn to build a couple big nice rigs
and possibly take the country over?

Hi RandyMarshCT
I know of one guy whos making Absinthe here,
Im pretty sure he has a license.
Abyss Organic Absinthe
http://ten103cambodia.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
I don't think he posts on this forum though
coincidently im drinking Absinthe right now,
but alas, its some cheap stuff.
Iv just searched the forum and only found a couple of
novice poster guys in Thailand, (and they to
cant find any copper.)
but none from Cambodia
I do remember a few years ago seeing a guy making vac stills
from Vietnam I dont know if hes a member of this board
Hey MB
Im pretty sure you can get ss 304/316 here, also
you can get corn on the cob, it's a bit smaller and has a slightly
more acidic taste, it might make an interesting mash!
Only the copper is the problem...
2 ways to get copper...
(1)i find a small American shop, get them to wrap it in
2 ft diameter coils & send it via DHL. Or...
(2)invite you or any other members to come here for a great holiday.
Im in Siem Reap, i Know some good tour guides, they will show you
Angkor Wat and many more, I can pretty much garantee you'll be safe
from violence, but not so safe from bad driving, poison likker or random poorly built
stuff falling on you in high winds.
(just dont forget to pack loads of 2 ft diameter copper coils...
In the mean time im gonna spring for a stainless shotgun condencer
you can get lots of welding done here cheaply

Re: Hello from Cambodia
I'm thinkn stainless boiler and column, packed with copper scrubbies ..If you can't get scrubbies sent in, maybe find a way to strip copper wire or better yet, just peel some new copper wire ..Boil it in whatever you can to clean it, then use it for packing ..
I can go on and on, but I'll leave it at that ..Definitely keep us informed ..
Pictures as soon as possible please.
