My UJSSM run output rate
Hi guys can you tell me if I'm running my setup with my pot still and Liebig too quick.
I'm running a spirit run if three stripping runs at approx 30-40%.
I've taken off 2l and it is still at 80%abv. I've never had 80% in my pot still.
It's running approx 250ml per 20-30mins.
I tried to upload a video but couldn't.

Re: My UJSSM run output rate
The output ABV for a spirit run usually does run much higher than the ABV of a stripping run. Likewise, if you run a wash with a higher ABV going into the boiler, your output will have a higher ABV than when running a low ABV wash.

My UJSSM run output rate
So will it mean I'll loose some of the carryover flavours because the proof is so high?
In which case I'll have to mix tails to get deep corny flavour.

Re: My UJSSM run output rate
Not sure how big your rig is but I take off at faster than that for a spirit run from a reflux column with a 3 gallon boiler charge and much faster when doing pot still runs... I collect ~1oz per minute at 95%... I do an entire spirit run collection in an hour or less... For a stripping run you want a broken to twisted stream... All you're trying to do is reduce the amount of water in the alcohol... You'll clean it up with a slower spirit run of the low wines later...

My UJSSM run output rate
Yeah my run went for 8 hrs. I was drained.
It was in my pot still
I charged my still with approx 12L of 60%. Maybe I did run it a bit slow, only because it was a spirit run, but I ended up with about 7L of spirt run ranging from 80 to 40% and then it really slowed down so I stopped.
Does that make sense?

Sounds similar to my run yesterday. Aired overnight and blended today. Included the second to last jar that I was sure was going into the feints collection. Lots of nice flavor towards the tail end, just before the cardboard. Final blend, 64.5%.
Took 4hrs at 1500w input

Re: My UJSSM run output rate
I think mine would of been around 1500-2000w
That's great NZ. How are you going to age it?
I haven't blended mine yet. I always get nervousness around fking it up and besides I have the damn flu so it's playing with my taste buds.

It wasn't for aging. I made it so that I'd keep my mitts off the stash that is aging.
By next week some of it will be steeping cherries, some in a honey liqueur. My white dog jar will be full again. I will put a 2l jar aside with some oak I've toasted.
Some backset is frozen for next time.

Re: My UJSSM run output rate
Sounds like you ran WAY too slow... And if you ran at 60% instead of 40% or lower you need to rethink what you're doing... You should never charge a still with high proof spirits, regardless of heat source... And collecting 7L from 12L doesn't quite sound right either - probably due to the high %ABV boiler charge...crazyk78 wrote:Yeah my run went for 8 hrs. I was drained.

Get it right and you'll be safer and more successful...
Re: My UJSSM run output rate
Crazyk, what size is your boiler and pot still (column diameter)?
There's nothing unusual about getting 80% at the beginning on the spirit run when you were running exceptionally slow...for a spirit run, I tend to find about 3-4L an hour on a 4" pot still at 3000-3600W provides good flavours...probably used to pull over 2L/hr on my 3" pot still at 2400W too (with Liebig)...
500ml an hour sounds exceptionally slow for just about any pot still.
A boiler charge of 30-40% is perfect Not sure what you were referring to by the 12L of 60% though!?
edit: Posted same time as Rad.

Re: My UJSSM run output rate
Just to clarify I added a total of 12L of 60% to 12L of water so ran a 30% charge..sorry if that wasn't clear.
I've got a 50l keg with 2inch column up to a lebig that is about 1000mm long.

Re: My UJSSM run output rate
500ml is a pint right? That's about what I get with a 3/4" still head and liebig condenser on a 6 gal boiler. (man i need to upgrade ) Waitin on that Christmas bonus and tax refund!
No, officer, I wasn't distilling alcohol! It was probably that guy!

Re: My UJSSM run output rate
There is quite a lot of useful flavor to be had when scavenging the last dregs of alcohol from a strip run. My UJSSM strip runs get taken down to 40% total and then have fresh wash added to cut further. It makes for lots of corn flavor in the final product if that's what you're after.crazyk78 wrote:Just to clarify I added a total of 12L of 60% to 12L of water so ran a 30% charge..sorry if that wasn't clear.

Re: My UJSSM run output rate
Thanks guys. Other than me probably wasting a bit left in there the other thing is I probably ran it a tad too slow.
Thanks for the feedback will tweak it a bit next time I run.
Cheers KD
