Here is an off topic subject, Wives?

Post by Fermented1 »

So, out of those out there, that are married, how does your wife feel, or think, about the time you spend on the process of doing the distilling process? Such as
the time cooking up and filling your fermentation containers, the time you spend checking them, watching them, ect? As well as the time it takes to cook up a run?
Does any of your wives give you issues or are the cool with it, OR even enjoy watching and even helping with different ingredients ideas?
Just wondering, cause my wife loves to help with recipies, and really likes to drink a some of the new batch to "test it" as it is coming out. But I have a
great wife.
Here is to LIFE, Liberty, and the pursuit of the PERFECT BATCH !!!!

Lucky you two, don't get me wrong, my missus is great and couldn't ask for better.SShe supports what I do but when I spend time in the shed she always says I spend alot of time out there!!. Says I drink to much (only drink on weekends and not to much) she hardly drinks, might have one or two. Says I stink from the distilling smell and smell of copper when I build. I just wish she had more interest in it, would make it so much more enjoyable for me. Wouldn't feel like I got to make me feel like I have to choose between her and the hobby I love more than anything in the world!!. So yeah, your lucky!!! Lol.

my wife and i work together. in our off time, she does what she wants, when she wants. buys what she desires without consultation. makes dinner if she wants or tells me to do it..if she wants. we take separate vacations.
she don't drink anymore, but she had a few in her day. she'll drive me anywhere if i had a few, and could give a damn if i spend some time in the shop doin what we do.
really don't like if i let slip into "pissed as a newt" territory though... and will let me know.... not that theres enough left of the old liver to do that much often anyway.
no jealousies, no agendas, no needy-ness. just trust.
parnter in business, partner in life. if it makes me happy, she's happy... and vice versa.
and while you are eating your hearts out...yeah, she's a stunning beauty too.
sorry about your luck...she's mine!

oh yeah, she'll wash mason jars and grind grain too!

My hangs out with me, I do my distilling in my garage. I have a nice couch and a big flat panel tv, we watch a little Sons of Anarchy while I run the still. Her favorite part is when I am mashing. She says that the smell of cooking corn, wheat and rye reminds her of her childhood, when her mom made oat meal or cream of wheat for breakfast.

Mine helps out a lot. She has made the cider for my apple brandy, made cider for Apple pie, helps with the ferments by punching down the cap on the grappa I got going, and likes that I have a hobby. I'm with bearriver as well: the only time she complains is when we run out!

Mine is not interested in what I do or how I do it. Don't give me too much grief as long as I don't take too much time away from 'us'. She don't drink much but won't touch what I make. Her entire family loves and appreciates it tho.

When my day job gets slow in the Fall/Winter my wife is very supportive of my hobby. If we had a bigger place - there might be another hobby I would be spending more time doing... but the kids require time and space to grow and I can't take over a room at this point.

I don't like the effects of alcohol - it's a depressant. I have had my share of binge drinking at a kid too. Ooofah!

I DO like a nice hand crafted drink though... the smell and taste of a good glass of wine or good liquor but the buzz is not my favorite. I enjoy a good project based hobby.

With that said - my wife likes the result of this hobby.
She is impressed with the quality of the liquor and she loves to drink with her friends socially so it works for us both.
My Uncke Mo taught me how to make apple Jack when I was in 6th Grade.

Wifey did the math and figured that I had spent just over 14 hundred dollars,
getting this thing figured out. Once she did the calculating, the math went like this:

$ 1,400 dollars divided by 50 bucks a half gallon at the liquor store = 28

We tend to run through a 1/2 gallon a week between us and a lot of friends
so in 28 weeks I have made the investment back - less the 6 bucks a gallon
that it cost to make.
Now she figures I am earning an extra $200 a month by not spending it at the liquor store.

For a long time she wasn't sure about what I was making, now when we join friends for
dinner she mostly won't have a drink - can't even stand the smell of Crown Royal anymore
Says she can wait until we get home and she can have the good stuff!!!

We tend to drink a bit more than we used to but not by much - just hard to not have the
next drink when yo know there is no hangover waiting in the morning.

She will join me in the man cave once in a while but generally she calls it "my" time

I got a great wife and a better friend in this one boys

My wife started out interested, but thought I might blow us up!

As we got some better drink from it she got more interested. Took about six months before she realized she could no longer stand commercial booze.

Started macerating things of all sorts. Hmmm...good and bad. She makes great bitters, limoncello, grapefruit vodka,...uses a bit much stock now and then.

This year I took her to ADI conference. She saw I wasn't the only idiot in the country doing this and her interest grew. She has helped with AG now and sees some science to it.

Besides that she feeds me and brings drinks to still...all good.

I have a feeling this is gonna be a good and long topic. I am a little off topic on this but if wifeee is not eating your shorts to bad then you need to thank her you are a lucky man (person). I have said this to a few people, but count your blessings and remember if momma is happy everyone is happy. If momma is pissed there ain't no one gonna have a good day. Thank her for putting up with what you do and get her that dress or pair of shoes. If your queen turns to B**** you are not gonna have a good day.

Mine puts up with this hobby, but she's not a fan. She doesn't drink ( if she has 2 drinks of wine in a week she's bingeing)
She is sure that I'm going to be busted and our good name :moresarcasm: is going to be spread all over the paper. That being said I think she's looking forward to our trip to wood sheds.

+1 on that... In her opinion, I don't make enough often enough so we spend too much running to the liquor store when stock is depleted...

Holly is the best. Can do anything in the distillery but dislikes cleaning out the grains. She is my right hand here, often enough my left as well.
Woodshed would not work without her involvement. She rules at tastings.
Recipe development is the only facet that is not shared. She has no interest so far. She doesn't drink much likker but knows quality. Has been known to put down a Shiny Mary or two.
The one thing I am certain of having done right in my life is finding Holly.

I honestly don't know what my wife thinks about my home distillation.
Guess she thinks it's just another thing I do in the shop.
She has her female hobbies and I have my caveman hobbies.
We have both learned to not argue about small things.
And I've learned to research, built or buy the things needed for her hobbies.

Because women are from Venus and men are from Mars - we be different in many ways.

On a different note - my wife thinks she'll go blind if she drinks what I make. THAT pretty much sums up her acceptance of what I do.
