Woodshed, I think what goose is saying is more along the lines of you don't travel to another country and insult their traditions. Have your views, as we all do, but let it be known you respect what they view as well. That about sound right goose?

Last year I visited Limestone Branch Distillery, a small startup in Kentucky. Owner told me he was using Tim's recipe for their "Moonshine" corn whiskey. We talked a little more and it became clear to me that his recipe is actually Uncle Jessie's UJSSM. Unless I'm mistaken, UJSSM doesn't include rye. We definitely saw rye in the Climax mash on a recent episode. I also have a sneaking suspicion that Tim is no longer contracting with Limestone...

Spent a big part of my life in a place in the US further south than any of those calling me out. Anyone claim 7 miles from the border of Mexico?
In the southern tip of Texas? Doubt it. For the most misplaced pride through much of that region.
In other words I really do not concern myself with how the boys down south take offense to my negative words about sugar. If they would step up. Sugar is about return, grains are about quality. No one here is selling am I right? But we all want the best return on investment. IMO grains are still the best way to go.
Lot's of ruffled feathers out there. I like that. For me this whole thing has been about provocation since the early post about Sugar in Shine. No place for that kinda crap. A couple caught that provocation from my OP. Others took offense. I've made a fair amount of money off of bad odds so I'm good with it.

I haven't found much over the counter to be werth a crap either. Only one available in my area that was ok (and just ok) was from copper run. they did have a hoppy wheat whiskey that was great. Now for the derailment, the beer for the hoppy wheat whiskey come from mothers brewing and was AG.

Has anyone tasted the Minnesota 13 white whiskey now being made by 11 Wells distillery in Minneapolis? It's made with oats, wheat, barley, and a heritage corn variety called Minnesota 13. I tried it and thought it was really tasty and the distiller knew what he was doing when it came to making the cuts. It sells for about $25 a fifth.

Two Loons distillery is literally is a stones throw from me. It looks a lot like shed's with very similar equipment but unfortunatly the distillers there don't seem to know much besides what equipment to buy. Perhaps they will learn and survive.
Gonna go try some of thier white corn whiskey later today. I'm interested to taste how much they have or haven't learned so far.

If I had the expendable income to spend in a liquor store, I think it would be for something I know I would like. I reckon I could buy some turbos, some sugar, make an 18% wash, strip it all into a single jug, take a drink, and tell everybody here how shitty it is. Don't need to pay premium dollar to do that.

Wow, late to this party. Lots of passion here! Truckinbutch has a nice 5 gallon pail of malted barley, and I was all about encouraging him to use it to get a leg up on the AG adventure. I think it would be a good way for anyone to start, and it will make a fine drop.
But I would never say anything about rising up to any marks. I've made lots of AG's, and I like them, and I've also done 5 generations of a UJ type sugarhead, and I like that too. The beauty of what we do is doing what we want, creating what we like. Only judgement I care about with my spirits is mine. And I would expect, and respect, that the same to holds for everyone else. Woodshed, you can't really just take possession of Truth to bolster your argument. I truly am grateful for your shared experience and I have total respect for your opinions, but they are opinions. I'll continue to make whatever I like, ain't not right or wrong, better or best about it. Truth belongs to no man. Truth belongs to every man.
Edit: Btw, TB, I knew what you meant, so there was no misunderstanding here. It's kinda like we talked about: People can march to the beat of their own drum, just don't come a beatin' on mine.

A friend's son-in-law works at Woodford Reserve and brings clear and 68.5% barrel 'bottoms' home quite frequently ..I've traded for some of both ..
Haven't touched 'em since the initial drinks ..Not terrible, but not to good at all.
I was disappointed .

Damn you would think a bourbon like woodford would at least be pretty good white guess time in the barrel really does fix most things... The local LQ has climax and midnight moon as well as George dickel white. Haven't tried any of them though. The only LQ bought white dog iv had is Smokeshine and it was damn tasty. Id just like to try it at 110 proof I bet the corn flavour is a verry nice."borat accent"

I've tried a few of them. Here's some of my opinions/impressions:
Georgia Moon. Has an odor and varies in quality and taste quite a bit...more than others. Not a fan.
Old Smokey: It smells and it tastes like turpentine to me. I don't know. But, first time I drank it I was like....what the hell?
Midnight Moon (Jr Johnson), is distilled within an inch of it's life. Has no odor. The flavor, what little there is...is ok and lightly sweet. But, it tends to taste more like vodka. (agree with Rad on that)
Tuthilltown (Hudson Valley NY) Corn Whiskey: Is pretty darn good, but pricey. They use kentucky hierloom (indian) corn that they grow in NY. The flavor is corn forward, good, and it's worth trying.
Pritchards White Whiskey: Also pricey (about $57 a bottle). Worth trying as well. Nice deep rich flavor. It's a wide cut, but it's tasty.
Buffalo Trace White Dog: this is more a bourbon cut, offered for tasting purposes. It's edgy, slightly hot, and slightly cloudy offered at barrel proof (a bit over 120). Not really corn shine, but interesting if you want to know what a barrel/aging cut tastes like off the still that's intended to mature in 3-6 years.
KingsCounty White dog: known these guys a while. They started out much like many of you have...using brewhaus/milehi stills and a hot plate. And developed it into a fairly large commercial distillery. Their earlier handmade/bottled spirits predictably varied in quality/taste some, but overall I have always liked what they do cause the taste reminds me of home. It's dead smooth, with some corn/grain sweetness and flavor. A thick flavor/cut.
There's plenty more to try that I haven't yet. But, those are ones I have tried that I can speak to.

I seen white dog for sale here but for some darn reason its always more than aged whiskey and I can't work out way so was never inclined to purchase it. Those i know who have didn't seem to think much of it. On another note old school "bootleggers"/slygroggers round here yrs back didn't use sugar as far as I know because it was hard to get any amount and was too darn expensive, but that's AU just figure the USA would be the same

That would be the novelty factor that goes along with being sucked in by the mason jar, nostalgic label, and often a short made up up story... Who in their right mind would pay $25 - $30 for a mason jar full of cherries with very few ounces of white dog in it...??? Anything they put in the jar that offsets and reduces spirits increases profit margin... Saw Jack Daniels unaged white whiskey in the store today. I think a 750ml was $50+

More like $75 at my liquor store for that same bottle. Its shocking... JD white isn't even worth trying in my book due to the outrageous marketing tactics alone. Forget it probably tastes like poo anyways.

Yes, the sin tax here in this state is absolutely out of control. A decent bottle will set you back a pretty penny. The tax on bottom shelf bottles costs more than the liquor. Making the tax over %100 in some cases. ... Not that anyone here would drink bottom shelf swill anyways, but it's still screwed up...

I have tasted a couple of the commercial white dogs and the problem is that they do taste like "shine". They seem to have that nasty taste of something coming off a pot still all mixed into one big vat. This is the stuff that works up my gag reflex. I am sure you have met these distillers.... "Cuts? Oh yea, I throw out the first few ounces cause that will make you blind.
