flEabay 10,000w SCR

Post by Antler24 »

I just ordered a Camco 5500w ULWD "wavy" style element, a 1' NPT welding spud, and one of these 10,000w SCR controllers from fleabay. I know a lot of people here have used this type of controller, but has anyone used the newer style? Comes in a small case with fan, I'll post a link below. Can I wire this up and use it as-is, or does it have to be mounted in another/bigger box to be used safely? I don't want anything fancy, no lights or ammeters or switches, just plug it in and adjust heat. I'll be running this on 240v, so I assume my 2 hot wires go to both input contacts, and the output contacts go to element. Ground box and keg. Neutral is only used if I want 120 off one of the hots right?

This is the one I bought:

One of our members recently purchased the newer model with cage and fan and as I recall it works flawlessly and barely gets warm... You could do a lot worse...

Antler gives us a report when you try it out. I run the older version with fan added. Works perfectly. Might buy the new one as a backup if you give it the thumbs up.

I like this, and have the old version without case or fan. Call me paranoid, but this thing should be covered in a way that keeps water from splashing on it. I try to keep things separate but there is always the unexpected splash or spray of water or worse to watch for.

I have an extra ammo box sitting around as well. I just bought it last night it says shipping could take as long as 9th of April, but I will let everyone know how it works as soon as I use it.

Be sure to post up and let us know how it works. A few people have recently bought those, but I don't remember hearing anything about how they run. I was thinking about picking up one for a spare.

I was just about ready to give up on these having had the fuse blow in 3 so far but here's a revised version. I'm prepared to give this model a go.

A couple of threads around that suggest that the digital ones don't work with our elements.

I have one of the digital ones that I bought years ago for my brewery. They don't work well, the adjustment is not even close to linear. Not recommended.

I'm impressed, the little controller works pretty good. I Don't have a meter to check voltage or amperage but will prolly add one. My element is a 120v 2k and it took about 2 hours to bring 11 gallons up to temp. That's on par with my variac, so I'll give it   edit: it barely even got warm.
