Re: German Whiskey?
7-30-12 SG is still 1.042 so I guess I can call it FG of 42.
According to the formula on this page-----
http://onebeer.net/refractometer.shtml
SG=93
FG-42
ABV=10.18
I guess we have some distillation to do this weekend.

I get ~6.6% with ~6% potentially unfermented...BrooklynTech wrote:7-30-12 SG is still 1.042 so I guess I can call it FG of 42.

1.093 - 1.042 = .051
.051 * 1.29 = .06579 OR 6.6%
Various sites use anywhere from 1.29 to 1.3125 as the multiplier... Using 1.3 is easiest for manual calculations...

Re: German Whiskey?
Well the formula on the "home page" http://homedistiller.org/calcs/alcohol_content agrees w/you. So do you have any idea why there is such a difference?rad14701 wrote:I get ~6.6% with ~6% potentially unfermented...BrooklynTech wrote:7-30-12 SG is still 1.042 so I guess I can call it FG of 42.

And do you think this is enough to run thru the still? should have about 4 gallons of wash.

Re: German Whiskey?
Well less than happy bout the last run. Only got about 20 oz before the temp in the column got up to 209 and the tails showed strong.
Mixed all three runs today in to my 1 gallon oak barrel. Put in a total of 82 oz. Didn't take an ABV reading. Will worry bout that in a few months. How long do you think it should sit in the barrel? I plan to rotate it a few times a week to keep all the wood wet.

Re: German Whiskey?
Couldn't wait any longer. Had to take a sip. Hmmm getting better.
Color is coming along, with a bit of that "Scotch" color
Taste is nice, getting smoother.
I"m not one of those guys with a tongue that can pick up 84 flavors. All I can say is I'm gonna like it a lot more in another 2 months.
Just might have to make another batch in 2013 with what I learned this year.
Will post a picture showing color in another month.

Re: German Whiskey?
After 3 months in the oak barrel I transfered it to an old Jose Q bottle. Taste is smooth about 35 proof. Question should I add some oak chips to the bottle to add to the oking or leave it as it is?
Re: German Whiskey?
if its been in a oak barrel why whould you add chips or other?
