Log splitter with log lift build
Finally getting around to building a log splitter. To late to use it this season but next year it sure will be nice to have
Re: Log splitter with log lift build
How fast are you gonna be able spilt? Have you thought about doing two at a time? Looks like your hydrolics can handle it.

Re: Log splitter with log lift build
Haven't thought about two at one time but I'm building the splitter for a 6 way split. 4" bore x 20" thro the pump is a two speed, 18g a minute . A friend has about the same setup, his runs about 10 seconds cycle. I'd be happy with that speed

Looks like the makings for a pretty good apple press to me.

Nice looking splitter so far, way better than an axe

You must have lots of bull pine. The white wood around there can be brutal.
I like cutting standing dead tamarack in those parts. Falls apart just looking at it. This time of year they are very easy to spot. This time last year I cut a mess of red fir and tamarack up behind 49 degrees north, the ski lodge. Be more this year...

Bull pine
I hate it. Your right there is a lot around. My favorite is tamarack and red fur. Good hot burning wood. 49 degrees north is a great place to get wood but for this year my buddy and I went in on a log truck load. Works out to 90 a cord.

Cranky, you are too much. It might just work.
I use a tractor mounted Splitter and it takes a lot of work out of the chore. I would not be able to Bust logs with a maul anymore. Still there's a lot of lifting and wallering the wood around. Here is a shot of my woodpile this year. 95% Hickory when I made this photo. I have since added a unusable Walnut tree to the pile. 21 ft long 10 feet wide and about 5 ft high now

Re: Log splitter with log lift build
The best way I've found to split wood is to use a tractor mounted Splitter.
And couple teenage boys do the work while I drink sweet tea, operate the lever and supervise so the youngens don't get hurt.
We can split a lot of wood that way. A briggs and Stratton engine will getter done but a 75 HP diesel does it easier.
Plus when you want to move to the next tree you cut down, just drive the tractor with the splitter to it.
Having a front end loader helps.

Re: Log splitter with log lift build
I was thinking something like this
I can't split wood any more because of my heart problems. I have some logs that have been curing for years waiting for my son to split them. Every once in a while I'll get ambitious and go split one but, as I've mentioned on other posts, I have a seemingly endless supply of rough cut 4x4s that I bring home and cut into 8" lengths. I stack them a certain way in my fireplace insert and a single 4x4 will keep my house so hot overnight I have to keep windows open. I also built my green bean trellis out of those 4x4s.
Only turned sideways instead of verical. Stack a couple dozen cheeses in between slats hit the button and watch the juice flow

Re: Log splitter with log lift build
I used a splitter for the first time this summer out at the cabin, sure took a lot of work out of the process. At home I split 2-1/2 cords with a mall & wedge, wouldn't want to do any more than that.

Splitting wood depends on the wood. I've got a couple blocks of gum and twisted post oak that would need explosives to split.

I got a gum tree that I used the chain saw to split it. Yea it used gas but it beat the hell outta beaten on rubber.shadylane wrote:Splitting wood depends on the wood. I've got a couple blocks of gum and twisted post oak that would need explosives to split.

Re: Log splitter with log lift build
Seen dry madrone stop a splitter dead.
A little 18" bar with a sharp skip tooth is the winning ticket.
Edit: That is smart LL. I have seen them CL ads for log truck loads. Someone in Colville with a yard likes to buy them also. Then he seasons it for 2 years and makes good money when he sells it. Pushes it all around with heavy equipment. Easy work. Made me look like a dummy going up yard it off the mountain myself...

I use my chainsaws, mauls and wedges, 8 pound splitting maul, and 4.5 pound splitting axe... Wood is my exercise and stress relief... Then comes fine tuning the wood stove throughout the winter so the furnace rarely, if ever, kicks on...
Re: Log splitter with log lift build
The right wood will . bend that. Make sure you get a
by pass pump.
Ole boys got a ram off a d9 .put it on a iron column beam
an twisted it with a piece of sweet gum. Didn't have a by pass.
an they won't quitin. If it won't able to do what they needed they
Didn't want it.
Usin chainsaw will eat up that chain. Powerhead don't care but your bar an chain do.
So I'm tole

Re: Log splitter with log lift build
Those gum trees are almost impossible to split, but they soften up after a year. You CAN split them then but the wood ain't worth it. Not many BTUs in it.
I did the same thing Jed did one time....just sawed it up in water size blocks to get it in the stove. Never cut another one. My Dad said he used to make wagon wheels out of them when he was a little boy in the 1920s....like a child's wagon but homemade.

Re: Log splitter with log lift build
I built a splitter on a 6" H beam in 1973 . The ram can be slid along the beam to adjust for firewood lengths or fence post lengths to 12' . Plugs into any tractor hydraulic system . I hire kids today to fetch and carry . I'm 'da Boss' what gives directions and sits there pulling the levers .

Re: Log splitter with log lift build
Build it so it will operate vertically. Trust me on this. Back up to the woodpile and sit in a chair while operating the lever. I'll never go back to horizontal again.

I built it about 5 years ago. This winter doing a little engine work too it putting on a timing belt , new fuel cell and gear change need to spin the motor a little fasterFreeMountainHermit wrote:Build it so it will operate vertically. Re: Log splitter with log lift build
The wedge is the trick in building an efficient wood splitter . I welded a piece of hard plate to the pusher plate . Welded two sections of 12" diameter schedule 80 pipe in to form a radius on each side of the wedge plate . Set it up on a milling machine and used a fly cutter to form the final radius and edge . 7' locust posts only travel 6" before they split clean from end to end .

I love the look of the 66-67 hardtops!!!Rad ride! Have a 68 Nova myself. Still building it. Have an iron block 6.0l LSX that will make about 525+hp so pretty mild setup. With twin turbos could make close to 2000Hp with it though... Should put my car in the 11.50s with the 4.10s detriot locker and 28x9's with my fat a$$ driving (99% street car, but will see the tack).likker liker wrote:I built it about 5 years ago. I'm with Rad on this one. Wood is a way to get some exercise and great for stress relief. Major feeling of accomplishment when splitting and seeing that pile grow. I do break out the neighbors splitter when I runrad14701 wrote:I use my chainsaws, mauls and wedges, 8 pound splitting maul, and 4.5 pound splitting axe... Wood is my exercise and stress relief...
