2" bokabob coil finished. 3 day salt removal

Post by Jamjargb »

Just finished my double coil for my 1st build, a 2" bokabob reflux. The coil consisted of 5m 6mm copper tube and was turned on a homemade jig mounted on my lathe. I didn't power the lathe to turn, just turned the chuck by hand. The jig had an inner aluminium bar of 18mm and an outer form of 35mm stainless tubing. It worked really well, the coil took about an hour to turn, getting the salt out took 3 days. I attached the completed coil to our hose lock hose via a hose lock to 6mm barbed adaptors (eBay) and loads of zip ties to prevent it blowing off. If anyone wants anymore info on the coiling give me s shout. Here's a few pics.

Looking good...

I'm fairly sure you're going to end up replacing that short take off tube with a mini-liebig because the spirits are going to exit the still at just under the boiling point of alcohol and you're gonna lose vapor as the spirits hit ambient air... That's a well known quirk with LM reflux columns... CM's and LM's have already cooled the spirits adequately because they require a product condenser by default... Unfortunately, most all LM's require on as well...

Keep at it... You're almost there...

+1 that's the prettiest reflux condenser I've seen
I'm looking forward to your future copper porn

Mini Liebig now finished. I used 15mm outer tubing over 8mm inner and 2 15mm to 8mm reducers. The in/out barbed cooling tails are home made on my lathe. All silver soldered. I am going to have a go at copper plating the Liebig. Here's a couple of pics pre-plating.

So you're going to try copper plating (electroplating) a copper liebig...??? :wtf:

Yep, covers all silver solder seams and overflows. Liebig isn't to messy, but if it goes ok I will do liquid management section as that has a big chunky seam for the butt joint between cup and upright.

I tried once to copper platiesoft solder (Sn97Cu3). It didn't work, the solder oxidised and turned black before a copper layer was formed.

I read silver solder takes the plating. Will let you know.

I did similar thing after 3 days of tring remove the salt I gave up. My double wound coil looked OK so I cut it in the middle the smaller coil I managed flush it the larger.... I quit.
Just lost 25 bucks... I went to Home Depot and got another 25 feet of 1/4 inch coper but this time I tied the textile at one to pevent oil leek out fast end and started to fill with cooking oil my wife used for fries. After tube was filled I squeezed lower part and then the upper so Oil would not leek out.
I started to wind and it came very nice, after the coil was finished i just cut the ends and the oil
started to leek out. Those youtube tuts with salt is total BS. try your wife french frie oil.

Great job on that coil. I would have gone with a graham condenser for my product cooling on a boka. With a graham you can come right off your output and keep everything vertical. Having a long liebig hanging off a 1/4" or 3/8" take off will need plenty of support.
