"Mut" feints run?

Post by magnuson25 »

Hello,

So I was wondering if anyone has any experience on doing a feints run that I am going to refer to as a "mut"? (There might actually be a name for this, but I am not sure.) Pretty much say I made a bourbon and then my next batch I made a Rye whiskey. Now I'm sure this wouldn't be enough for a feints run, but pretend that between these two different batch of feints or make up some other feints that are not the same, would that make a good whiskey to run or should I try to run all the same kind of feints together?

Thanks,
Ryan

I collect all my feints together for the feints run. Whether a corn mash, a single malt, or a sugar wash...all the feints are run in the reflux column for cleaning up. However, I don't combine rum feints with the rest, simply because of the strong flavors residual in them. But the rest....a "mut's brew".

If they are kind of related, I run them together, usually with some fresh wash added. That has made some very nice product.

I've started putting used oak from my empty jars in the feints jars. The only run I've done produced surprisingly good white dog which is now aging on JD barrel chips and some vanilla bean. I'm really looking forward to tasting it in a few months.

Thank you, so you would run this through a reflux vs a pot still?

I run mutts through my pot. But I don't include strong off flavor feints. Whiskey and rice, sure, but not rum or walnut.

I don't combine feints. I am limited to 5 gallon batches, so I strip with a thumper and use the feints for the thumper charge, keeping each species separate from the others. It gets me a little more low wines at a little higher ABV. It adds about 5 minutes to the run time. That is the lag between first vapor getting to the thumper and first product coming out.
Distilling at 110f and 75 torr.

I always run combined feints from multiple recipes, or "Mut" if that's what you care to call it... My feints always get sent through my LM reflux column, most of the time starting from with a 35% boiler charge... The results are always clean 95% ABV spirits with compressed foreshots and heads... As soon as I hit the tails I usually shut down because they compress into something way too wretched to bother with...

+1. I toss the last couple of jars into the feints jug for recycling, but you would need a hazmat suit for anything over 175f.
