Rum Blue flashes
Yesterday afternoon i started on my first batch of rum.
When i was walking past it that night i noticed little blue flashes like what static would make playing over the surface of the wort.got my wife to have a look incase it was me being stupid but sge could see it as well..Is it normal for little blue flashes over the surface of the rum while it ferments? Bright enough to see through the fermetarion drum? It looks cool at night but its a little disconcerting

My best guess is that it's static electricity.Padre_nz wrote:I can see how they would be called rum fairies.... is it something to be concerned about? Cant seem to find anything on it have I fone something wrong in the mix?
My own rum ferments are pretty violent so it's not unbelievable that there would be tiny flashes of lightning happening.

Re: Rum Blue flashes
Have you got pictures of this phenomena?
If you and your wife can see it, a camera should be able to see it too

You design it, I make it. Copper and Stainless. Down under. PM me.
Re: Rum Blue flashes
I'd like to see some pics as well. I've only done a dozen or so sugar washes but hundreds of extract and all grain beers. I've never saw anything like described above.

I remember when fermenting shmoo, there was a blue light. But on the pics it was gone...

Re: Rum Blue flashes
This is called Triboluminescence
The still is not a liar. Mash and ferment quality is 99.9% of your performance.
Re: Rum Blue flashes
So what is different about rum that you don't see this in other washes? Or is it happening and people just don't notice?
Re: Rum Blue flashes
Sorry guys I was to busy going wtf is that to take a photo, if I see it again I will take a video of it as a photo will be too hard.

Re: Rum Blue flashes
Nothing that Ive read so far about Triboluminescence, says anything about it happening in a sugar water solution. Everything that I see indicates that it only happens when sugar is in crystal form.
If anyone has a link to a source that says otherwise Id be keen to see it.

Will be setting down my next wash tomorrow... Unfortunately I can't seem to find the recipe I used but will follow it as close as possible from memory. If it happens again I will record it as I think it will be to hard to take a photo... night all

Re: Rum Blue flashes
First day of rum watch... I think watching the rum is scaring them off though I only noticed it on the second night haha. Pikey before hand I had only made ciders and mead I have only just go into the distiller scene... I think if they don't show up in the next couple of days I will put it down to the other type of molasses and a chemical reaction (different brand used this run), new fermenting barrel haveing static or just a freak occurrence
