Cool DIY Whiskey Dispenser

Post by Twisted Brick »

Such a creative way to display and dispense one's hard-earned efforts. It would be a fun project to build in that shop.

Not sure if the jury is still out on the viability of having silicone (to set the spigot) come in contact with ethanol at room temp, though.

What did I just watch? YouTube is genuinely doing woodworking (very) soft porn now?

And I'm sorry... who wears yoga pants in a workshop? Ignoring splinter problems and other safety issues, there are no pockets! Where you do put your stuff?

Not gonna say the first answer that came to my mind!

Joking aside, I 100% agree. As a hobby woodworker myself, I can’t say that I was especially impressed. But I’ll give her credit, she clearly knows how to get people to watch her channel. You don’t have to have skill or talent if you have a body like that and are willing to show it off.

As for the dispenser itself, I kind of like the idea of a liquor wall. I wonder if you could replace the silicone with an oak donut, which would swell and seal against the glass, and maybe even do a tiny bit of aging over time?

I would go with beeswax. And maybe find a spigot which is tapped.

In fact I would probably look at sandwiching an oak frame between two glass sheets. You could wax the oak to prevent oaking... or just use it as the final "barrel" in a solera system.

Frankly the dispenser is the second thing I paid attention to.

I had a hard, time watching that. Pun not intended. I want my click back.

Thanks TB. Now I think I need to start a new hobby: woodworking. Or, “sanding” at least.

Ironically, none of the other students in my shop class looked like that. Probably a good thing tho, because we likely wouldn’t have finished many of our projects.

Or simply use a wooden “swage fit” valve. Some cask suppliers still make them. Obviously the glass hole would need to be tapered to the swage, but that’s doable.

No. You start by firmly buffing your hard wood... er...

Hang on, I'll start again.

My idea was that you don't want your whisky dispenser to oak the hell out of your nicely balanced whisky that you're trying to serve. So before assembling the glass I would apply wax to the oak surfaces that would be in contact with the spirit to ensure that it was inert.

Or you could "age" the dispenser with some neutral to pull out the bulk of the flavour and then use it as the final barrel. I do like the idea of a dispenser like this as an alternative to an infinity bottle.

Edit to add: I do think that with an appropriate clamping mechanism you should be able to make a dispenser like this without resorting to silicone.

It's actually glass as well, just frosted, but don't know if it's bonded with glue or "cast" as a unit. Also those are building materials and certainly not rated food-safe let alone high-proof alcohol safe.

So what is the actual consensus on this.....suitable project, or neat idea that actually doesn't work due to the silicone? Is there an actual suitable alternative that 100% will work?

I have never seen blue wood at any of the lumber yards I have frequented in the last 55 years. And that is EXTRA low grade glass.

It's a "walnut and resin board" as stated in the video, so a premade product.

What about the quality of the glass.....that shouldn't affect anything?

I understood that the board was from a previous project but still. Resin? Not on the list of approved materials. And as commented in another current thread, leaded crystal is glass but generally considered now to be worth avoiding for food consumption. The glass used is a building material. I doubt the manufacturer took the time to check that they were using a food-safe glass.

Just framing material, so it should be okay, no?

I never thought about the lead, that's a good point. I'm not aware of research into how many ppm you might pick up from that.

It's resin as in epoxy. But it's true that the wooden part is purely decorative as the spirit is entirely contained inside the glass block.

But I still think you could make this correctly with oak and glass sheets using beeswax as the sealant.
