First consumable distillate

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.
Pics are VERY welcome, we drool over pretty copper 8)

First consumable distillate

Post by Ky_loballa »

Today is the day of my first run with the intentions of keeping. Does any more experienced distillers have any advice that you wish you knew or got pushed towards before I fire up and try to make a drinkable product?
(15.5 gallon keg propane fired ,3” column detuned for pot mode, already done my cleaning run and sac run
30 gal of Shadys sugar shine sg at 1.072 finished.999 and enough pony kegs to save low wines )
Might seem redundant just trying to save myself from a simple mess up thank you!

Do your stripping first before having intentions of sampling your results.. the spirit if done properly may give you something to sample..

After you done like Stilleboy adviced, use your non-detuned column for a neutral. Not much flavor in sugar to use a pot. But then we do not know what type of column you have.

Sounds good, thank you. Feel prepared for it but I’m sure there will be some small things I’ve missed in preparation

The limited info on your setup, limit us from being able to assist further..

But your limitation on the 3" riser will be the PC in the stripping run, and how much of the load the boiler will carry, and how clear the finished wash was.. are just a few items to be mindful of..

3”x32”copper packed stainless column with dephlegmator. Wash has been racked into smaller vessels for two weeks to try to clear it up some which has worked.

A dephlegmator is RC (reflux condenser) not a PC (product condenser) which is used a CM unit and not required on a stripping run..

I completely misread your last post about the pc. I apologize, and thank you for telling me that as it’s simple but something I wouldn’t have took into consideration as much until I started pushing it to hard thank you again for mentioning and reminding me. Hoping to have some updates tonight and the countless hours of reading paying off and atleast having a successful run under my belt!

That's what happens went notes are not made, or if notes were taken, weren't followed..

No apologies needed.. but you haven't answer what PC you are using, as it will have an imput on the still behavior..

It would be wise not to count your "eggs yet" as it said before the run has been done..

One last tip.. don't overload the boiler, providing at least 1/3 for head space..
