nylon silk screen for separation
I had mentioned using silk screen material for separation in other people thread and did not get any responses. I had used nylon bags for other reasons and know they held up to some serious abuse. They can be store bought from 1 gal to 50. I am getting ready to order parts to make mine soon, which is why I am posting this. It too seems so simple I must be missing something. I plan on using some 2" sch 40 pvc I have for a frame this using these clips I will attach to mount the material to the frame, In the link I have towards the bottom you can see the different meshes available from this company. I know nothing of this companies product or their pricing just used for an example.

Search a bit for GA Flatfoot posts... hope i git his username correct. Or geotextile fabric. The only issue is when you have ungelatinized flour or wheat and rye.... but geotextile as last filter.

Re: nylon silk screen for separation
I have seen that thread. I posted about 20 and 50 gallon bags used in another industry that would work better in my opinion. They have nylon material on the sides and screen on the bottom. The coarser mesh bag they call work bags. They use paint mixers inside these bags. I have used them for many years. Pero they cost more then I'm willing to pay. I believe the nylon side walls are not needed for this. So I am making mine all screen with a coarse mesh.I will place that over a 2'x2'x3' tub. If I ever get my parts and this works as I believe I'll post some pics. If your back is like mine I would look into them. I haven't drained grains in them but other material that is thick also.

I use BIAB https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01D53 ... UTF8&psc=1 bags but have found that some are too fine these seem to work well.

Canuckwoods that looks like a 10 gal filter bag I used for an airless sprayer. I think the nylon silkscreen material offers a coarser mesh. If this doesn't work I'll give that a shot.
Just have to make sure they are nylon and not polyester.

Re: nylon silk screen for separation
I've used brew bags as well as the geotextile that was mentioned previously. From my experience the geotextile has worked much better on my thick corn mashes and doesn't clog like my brew bags have. It is fairly thick compared to the brew bags so I can just clamp it down with the locking ring on my mash barrel. My method is to throw half a barrel of mash on it and give it a day or two to filter through and throw whats left out to the piggies and then rise and repeat for the second half. The geotextile also seems to filter out a good bit of the trub as well leaving a nice clean beer that plays nicely with my electric element.

I use the filter bags at 800 micros to drain similar products. I have had the bags for years, They cost a bit so I will look into other materials when I wear these out. Take care,Toto

Re: nylon silk screen for separation
May seem weird but I now use a tshirt. I was trying all kinds of things. I still use the paint bags for the bulk of grains but then I do a filter with the tshirt and my cornmeal mash comes out almost crystal clear. It does take some time but I usually mash some grains or tinker while it gravity drains.
I drink so much now,on the back of my license it's a list of organs I need.
