Whey protein body building supplement
Anybody ever consider using it as a yeast nutrient? My brother is a health nut and I was reading the back of his supplement today. It's loaded with amino acids, b vitamins and a few salts, calcium, magnesium etc... Then not much else! Can't see anything dodgy in there so I'm thinkin about using a tablespoon of the stuff in some sugar wash ...

sounds good, please try it and let us know! it may not clear well due to all the protein, but maybe the yeast will metabolize it.

I think i will...The only problem I can see is that these things normally have a flavoring like banana, strawberry or vanilla but then a tsp or two in 30 liters shouldn't affect it too much hopefully

I think it's lacking a lot of what yeast actually need and would contribute a lot of fat and oil into the wash... Give it a go if you like but there are better sources of the nutrients yeast need... Those microscopic single celled organisms aren't into bulking up...

I think it would work well... Using protein blends myself (not for fermenting, but for strength training) the problem is that it would clump up together... kind of like flour. Some are better for this than others.
If you can get it even distributed some how... perhaps add a little hot water to some powder to make a dough/goo, so then you can even it out easily, then add more hot water and boil it?

Well I'm gonna run a big 150l batch of neutral in January. Maybe il do 1/2 wineos recipe and 1/2 wineos recipe PLUS whey protein. Then I will find out if there is any difference in fermentation time or flavour.
I think you are right tho athiril I will need to make a paste of it first before stirring it in.

Whey itself won't ferment (without further treatment) using the sugar-loving yeasts we use for most spirits. (Saccaromyces this or that, means sugar yeast, more or less)sparky marky wrote:Anybody ever consider using it as a yeast nutrient? So it may not be happy added to one of those mashes.
The yeast whey likes is Klyveromyces (k marxianus, aka k. fragilis, is one of them) and I am guessing that could be taken to mean, milk yeast.
Used to make whey into vodka, but difficult to obtain except commercially.

That's true baker, but the respiratory substrate will still be plain Ol sugar. I would just be using a tiny amount of the supplement to provide the trace minerals, amino acids and vitamins that yeast need to be healthy while fermenting. Alot of people on this board seem to think this kinda stuff benefits a plain sugar wash.
I went back to my brother this morning and got the ingredient list off the back of the box, I recognize alot of buzz words and chemicals I hear people on this board chatting about:
Hydrolysed whey protein
Whey protein isolate
Whey protein concentrate
Cellulose
Maltodextrin
Emulsifier
Dicalcium phosphate
Calcium carbonate
Pantothenic acid
Vitamins B1, B12, B6, B2
Xanthan gum
Starch
Flavouring
Then it lists 19 amino acids present in the mix (and if I remember my university days correctly there are only about 20 amino acids most forms of life need to be happy!)
I'm gonna give it a go in a controlled experiment kind of way

unflavored 100% whey is availible if u dont want to mess with any of the artificial flavoring used in them, as well as alot of the oils.
but the human body has the ability to convert protien into glucose (sugar) to store it as fat, maybe yeast is able to metabolize it as well

One test is worth a thousand opinions, looks like we need more documentation on this! Also it has been a while since I have been in a health food store but as I remember it is a more expensive way to go unless it is a high concentrate and you use it sparingly. Let us know how the run turns out.
