Sipping some Angry Orchard cider and a snifter of some 24 hr old faux wheat whiskey. Damn this stuff is smooth which is surprising for how uber young it is, i did proof it back to about 86 proof and added 2 ice cubes to the snifter(which is how i always sip my whiskey)
There's whisky in the jar

Sazerac Straight Rye. 6 years old. It's very "unlike" any rye I've had. Most ryes I've had are a tad sharp in the nose, spicey on the finish, etc. This one is dead smooth at 45% and has a spice "taste" in the finish (not hot, not sharp) that is long and slightly sweet. Very, nice. And one of my favorites for sippin'. It's kind a hard to find at times (comes and goes). It's moderately priced (anywhere from 32 -38 dollars. If you find it...snag it. But, only this one...the straight rye, 6 year old. I've had some of their signatory stuff and its not the same. This one is special :) And it goes to 11.

Sazerac and Templeton are the 2 very best Rye's IMO. Very delicious. Makin me thirsty to go buy a bottle. I been pretty unhappy with the last few whiskey purchases IVe made. Trying to figure out if they're really that bad or if my taste buds are just used to my own hooch anymore these days?

Last night I poured an Iowa Bourbon from Cedar Ridge. Blech!! I literally poured it back in the bottle and grabbed my bourbon. LOL. I think I broke my tastebuds or something, maybe too much tasting right outta the spirit run? LOL

I have only tried one Cedar Ridge product, Unaged Whiskey, I really liked that. 50% ABV and not too hard on the head the next day.

Hey Midwest,

I have found numerous times that very young sugar wash faux whiskeys taste very smooth in the first few days or so and then go harsh. Its amazing what time will do to heal this problem in my opinion. I have sweetfeed that no one liked but me cause it was one of my first. So I aged it on oak cubes, gently, adding some fresh ones every 6 months to a year. After 3 years this tastes like a cross between a smooth Bourbon and blended Scotch. Samahon has some great posts on aging, look em up if you haven't read them already.

cheers

I know what you mean Jimbo. I know my tastebuds "do" change daily, etc. But, sometimes..it ain't you. I recall Blanton's I had years ago...single barrel..that was so smooth it was insulting to me. It tasted like a hint of maple to it...was just dead smooth. Somebody gave me a bottle of it recently...it was very, very "sharp" (like all heads that hadn't had time to work out). I gave it away. I can definitely tell you it wasn't the same bourbon.

A small glass of my white rum over ice. This one had the dunder from a previous wash in it, not bad for being so young, some sweetness and a nice rummy flavour.

I actually like Lexington a lot. Not too expensive and very nice flavor. Right now I'm into may last bottle of Birdwatchers vodka and soda. Trying to figure out when I can run the batch that has been ready for a week.

Drinking a dark Belgian Abbey beer I made myself. A bit young still. Notes of the yeast there that I don't like. And right now ... an oats & rye Pure Whiskey. Bit hot to the palate. Maybe because it was based on a 10% sugar head a la UJ?

Not a big Rye fan but I finished off a bottle of Willett 6y.o. Rye, much better than the Templeton. I think the Templeton is currently sourced from LDI so it isn't really even a craft whiskey made in Iowa. Even though it tastes ok that irritates me when they try to pass off some BS story to sell me a bottle.

Damn, no shit! Couldnt believe it so looked it up, sure as hell, and Bulleit, Redemption, High West and George Dickle ryes too. WTF? Well, I do like it regardless. But it pisses me off too that its a corporate factory hooch. Bastards. At least Templeton is a bonafide distillery, not a 'faker' like so many. Weird that they dont make their own flagship product tho.

High West makes theirs too. They just started selling someone elses until theirs aged enough. Their was a pretty good article in the last Whisky Advocate about them. The only one I had of theirs was a mix of a LDI sourced(??) Rye mixed with their 2 year old. It was acceptable but I liked the Willett and the Templeton better.

At work tasting some "Campus Oaks" Old Vine Zinfandel from the Lodi region, "Silver Seal" 20 yr old Speyside scotch. and some Dead Head aged Mexican rum. Favorite was the scotch. A little on the sweet side as far as scotch goes and not very peaty but still nice. Would sell for around $100.00/750 ml, The Zin was very nice also. Good nose and spicy notes and medium length finish. Around $15.00/750 ml. Rum was just ok. Came in a funky shrunken head hard plastic bottle covering. Too expensive at around $41.00.

A shot of 38% grappa vodka. Yes, I know, I should let it age for at least a month or so.

But it is hard to resist.

Pretty nice already.

Oh, and I finished Big R's mead brandy. Nice too!

Would you call that "sake"? Just the Puffed Rice cereal neutral spirits diluted to 100 proof not the Crystal Light part.

Sippin a 7.6% cider while running first batch of this seasons apple brandy. This one is with Lalvin 71B-1122 yeast. First time trying this, its very nice. Went really dry (0.995) in almost 4 weeks, 7.6% final, but not puckery dry, still has a nice fruityness. I like this yeast. Pulled 2 gallons for cider and running the rest for brandy. Have 2 more batches to run. Cote de Blanc and EC-1118 yeasts. 2 more gallons from each will be blended into a carboy to keg up after settleing another month. Will see if I want to blend the batches of brandy or keep them seperate after a few months on oak. If the brandy profiles are different Ill keep them seperate for grins.

Cheers.
