super yeast sugar wash question

Post by steve541 »

I just made my first sugar was with super yeast xpress. The directions called for 17.5 lbs of sugar to make a 6.5 gallon batch. I messed up and added extra water about a gallon and a half extra. I'm assuming it will be fine just a bit under my desired 20% abv. The SG was 1.095. any thaughts on this? thanks

You managed to get the potential ABV down to about 14.5% which is far better than pushing greedily high... It just doesn't pay to push for high gravity washes...

So I guess my second mistake turned out to be a blessing? Great. My first mistake was the sweet feed was It for some reason smelled bad so after a week I just put it into the compost. Going to try that again after I learn more. This site is great! Thanks everyone for all the great advice!

So my super yeast sugar wash is now down to .993 I just added the super clear. Funny how its one week to the hour. Do I need anti foaming agent for my run? I will be useing a 15.5 keg for this boil since its too much for my 5.25 kegs. Or should I run two smaller batches in the smaller kegs? I think I'm going to start a batch of the gerber wash next. Thanks

6.5 gal. in a 15 gal still will be fine, you don't need anything added . just clear and run.

I just made my first run last night. I used the sweet feed wash with turbo yeast....... Wow talk about tasting like hair of the dog..... its pretty rough. I have cleaned everything up and I will try the sugar wash. I am sure I did something wrong. I have been told to charcoal filter it and it will be better. I may just dump and chalk this up to learning... What is the best yeast. I am thinking about going to the store and just by some Red and White.

There has to be a reason that your first run wasn't successful, Kentucky shinner.

If you can tell us exactly what you did someone here will be able to help, but we need details eg, recipe, still type, yeast. The more detail you supply, the better feedback you will get. And forget about the activated carbon and wine until you've ironed this problem out.

That sentence pretty much says it all... Sweet feed and turbo yeast will definitely cause problems and I'm more than a bit doubtful that you'll be able to clean the product up without more effort than it would be worth... Let this run be a learning lesson to break the turbo yeast greed habit... Turbo yeast doesn't need additional nutrients... Sweet feed needs very little additional nutrients... You've overdosed the ferment with far too many nutrients... Both sweet feed and turbo yeast can impart off smells and flavors, individually, and you now have them from both...

Get the feel of the overall process using a simple Tried and True recipe rather than wasting time, effort, and money, making mistakes... That's why we have a Tried and True section... I reduces the disappointment level and makes our job here easier...

I can only imagine how toxic that sweet feed and turbo wash must have smelled...
