heads/tails disposal

Post by mendodistilling »

I need help with suggestions for heads/tails disposal. Is there any alternative uses for it, will it foul a septic system since it may kill all biology?

Reflux the snot out of it to get it as neutral as possible and dump the rest. I think you'd have to put a whole lot into a spetic system to actually kill everything in there but I've got very little experience with septic systems. How much total volume are we talking about(gallons/liters)? As an alternative you could just dump it on the edge of the lawn outside of the area you want to keep nice looking. I dumpped about a gallon of foreshots/feints on a tree I wanted to get rid of and over a month later it still looks fine...

Unless you are talking massive quantities, simply disposing of heads and tails into a septic system should not present any problems due to the dilution rate... Most septic tanks are in the 1000 - 1500 gallon range and remain filled to nearly maximum capacity unless there is an unintentional leak... And it probably processes worse things than alcohol throughout its service life...

Here is an example... Dumping 10 gallons of 75% heads and tails into 740 gallons of gray water would result in a ~1% ABV solution... That small percentage would have no effect on the septic systems health...

Recycle, there are recipes for using it to make windshield wiper fluid, some people have made camp stoves and used it as fuel, us it to clean tools in shop.....

Windshield wiper fluid it is for me. And somehow, after some ageing, the smell I get when cleaning my windows ... is just beautiful. Makes me wonder: "why did I toss that?

I work on the theory that my 'heads' are basically metholated spirits, so I keep a bottle separate and use them where I would use meths.- cleaning, making shellac, removing felt markers, removing sticky residue from labels etc. Should work just as well to start a charcoal BBQ as regular meths ?
Where I live, meths is between 3 & 4x the price of gasoline.

I would consider Methanol to be in the Foreshots, not Heads...
