New addition
Well i finally added my thumper. Does anyone see any problems with what i have done. Its all stainless steel sanitary fittings with the exception of the condenser. Let me no what u think!!
Re: New addition
Just my personal view but I'm not liking the fact that the vapor has to travel way down lower than the boiler itself just to hit the thumper juice, and then has to rise way up to get to the condenser... I see this as a potential problem with parasitic cooling causing the thumper to overfill with no way for the excess to return to the boiler...
Re: New addition
concreat is a heat sink / would & would condense& flood as rad says raise it & a overflow back to boiler with a p trap good to go
Re: New addition
Hi, I dont know much about usin a thumper, but why do you have approx. 18" riser and then have roughly 9ft of tube between take-off and landing?
why so much air cooling before the condenser? Just a bit curious. Cheers

Re: New addition
Great....thanks,that will b no problem ill just cut out 12 inches n weld it back together.
Re: New addition
Hi jmesle, I meant why do you have 9feet of tube incuding thumper between take-off from riser and output to condenser/worm.
Not tryin to confuse anyone, I'm tryin to work it out.
cheers

Re: New addition
Its a good clean build and looks good otherwise.
Insulate them extra pipes or reduce the footage.
Take a look at Usge's build for a real good look at a nicely done thumper set up for hobby styled action.
WTG and nice work thus far.

Re: New addition
I just made it that way cuz it was easy to do. Im all about makin it better. What would u guys say if i did it this way. I just happen to have this nice butcher block my pap left me!
Re: New addition
Hi 2nd one looks better to me, but, I dont know, I cant see very well on laptop but all that stainless will need some copper in the vapour path to reduce sulphides. Lookin really good from what I see, pics are not showin up on here in large scale so stugglin with gettin old eyes.
Keep up the good work

Re: New addition
Muchhhh better, im liking the liebig mounted on the wooden structure. Keeps alot of un-needed pressure off of the piping, How have your finished products been coming out?

Re: New addition
I havent run it with the thumper yet. I have made quite a few ujssm runs without it and it has performed well. 2maro gonna make a few adjustments so the thumper will sit on that butcherblock
Re: New addition
There it is.... Will this satisfy most of you... I hope so. I take recomendations from people on this site to heart. Like i mentioned earlier i put a copper scrubby in my column. Ive been seeing people say pack the column how many scrubbies would u recomend i try. I was afraid to put more in it, i guess i just felt i would be blocking it off too much
Re: New addition
Nkay now that is a nice lil outfit.
Use it in good health
Scrubbies? No need.
Cheers

Re: New addition
Much much better. I run a 2" x 12" column then 90 off and reduce down to 1 1/4" inlet into my thumper then use 1 1/4" outlet over to my worm and it works great. Here lately I've been single running my UJSSM while using the thumper. I pull off some really nice 140-150+ clear spirit collecting down to 110-120, everything else goes into the feints jug.. I like being able to single run using the thumper, it really saves some time.
I'm about to start a rum ferment and plan on running it the same way..
Enjoy,
Martin

Re: New addition
Just wondering what kind of pump you use in your water reservoir, gph or whatnot. Nice set up though. Well thought out and I too like the support you made for your liebig.

Re: New addition
The pump is a submersible 220vac pump.way bigger than anyone would need. It will push 50 gallon a min. It was free the best kind. I have a 1 1/4 line coming off the pump to a tee. one branch goes back in the tank and the other goes to the condenser. The branch that goes back to the tank has a ball valve so I can adjust flow. I felt that with this big of a pump running the small Liebig it would b like dead heading the pump. so I basiclly relieved the back pressure by just dumping it back to the tank. It works fine.... A lil big but again....Free!. There are no thermal water layers in this tank because it gets circulated so much.

To tell ya the truth I have only run UJSSM and only single run it out of my pot still. My single runs averaged about 2 gallons maybe a lil less of 120ish proof. Good cuts had a lil flavor in it,everyone who tried it seemed to like it.I just wanna see how the thumper performs with the UJSSM. Next I'm gonna run rye.....can't wait!

Re: New addition
if you insalate the column & put a old blanket on your thumper you can shorten up your run time at least it helps me in this cold climate
Re: New addition
You don't need scrubbie in your column. But, depending on how you did your input downtube on the thumper...if you are getting surging (big, globby bubbles), a bit of scrubber in the downtube at the bottom will help diffuse the bubbles/vapor more, make smaller bubbles and make it run smoother.
Re: New addition
Hi, I think the reason the o.p. is using scrubbers is coz I suggested it earlier. I was under the impression that the riser/lyne arm and tubes to and from the thumper were made from stainless, and, to be quite honest, they still look that way to me on this laptop with my glasses on.
My apologies to all concerned if I am wrong, I was sorta surprised to see a stainless pot and thumper.
Anyway,, looks really good to me.
Cheers

Looks really good, well done !

Re: New addition
I like the second build much much better. I gott ask, where you go into the thumper what are you using to connect the pipe? I assume that you are going to the bottom of the 7.5 gal keg with your pipe on the input side right? Oh yea more pics and results please.
Re: New addition
The thumper inlet has a 2" pipe that goes down to about 1" off the bottom and is welded in place. On top i have a 2" sanitary ferrul welded to the pipe. I also welded a sanitary ferrul to the outlet in the center where the valve for the keg was. I hope to run it this weekend i started a ujssm last saturday. Ill post some better pics when i get a chance. Gotta warn ya though im not an expert tig welder! ......lol
Re: New addition
Here are a few closer pics of my boiler thumper and cooling tank. Hope to post results of my thumper run over the weekend
Re: New addition
Good for you beacuse of your pipe being welded 1 in off bottom of keg. I was hoping you didn't have a puke pot instead of a thumper keg. I was wondering if you used the 3/4 beer stem with out the valve to go back in the little keg. I could't tell how it went in. If I do a thumper I will try the stem. Looks good. less pipe means less heat wasted.
Re: New addition
The inlet is 2" down to the bottom. I have seen in a bunch of posts including this one that a diffuser is used at the bottom to create smaller bubbles and would be a good idea. I did not do this, i may do it later or put some scrubbies in there? Only reason i didnt is because i'm a little cautious when it comes to creating pressure!! We had one time where i work, a water tank that was vented to atmosphere. We had a gauge on it that we checked every day. One time we were doin some PM work on it and the vessel was showing it had a few milli bar on it. We thought the gauge may be bad after we cheched a few things.Took off the tri clover clamp holding the gauge on and it shot the gauge up thru the ceiling above. Now this was a larger vessel 390 gallon..... a bit larger than my still of course, But it still spooks me to this day. If that gauge would have hit someone in the head it would have killed them.Thats why i havent built a reflux head yet. Seems like the vapor inside those get restrictced a lot based on some of the designs i have seen.....i will one day once i get past all the fun i can have with a potstill
Re: New addition
Wow nice rig! looking forward to hearing your results.
