Hi guys,
I want to filter my barrel aged spirits. Nothing dramatical, but I don't want any wood/dust coming over in the final bottle. I have a bottle filler ordered. And it comes with a filter.
Any of you have any idea on the optimal size of the filter? I get 3 choices: 5 micron, 1 micron and 0,25 micron.
Regards, Odin.

Re: Filtering
Hey Odin
I as many do use coffee filters for my final product. I looked up the micron rating and found the average coffee filter to be 10/15 micron. I would think to use the 5 micron as it should be sufficient for what you want and plug up less then the smaller micron sizes.
Do you plan on putting spiced rum through this filter? I find I go through a lot of filters when bottling mine and would love to find a better way. Please keep us advised on how well this works

Re: Filtering
I'd imagine the 5 micron filter would work fine. I always use coffee filters and I never get sediment in the bottom of my whiskey bottles. I don't think barrels add much in the way of extra-fine particles.

Re: Filtering
It's the toast/charr particles I am most woried about. I think I will go with the 5 micron one!

Re: Filtering
I'd go with the 5 micron and then if more filtration is desired just place a 1 micron in series after the 5 micron...

Re: Filtering
I use cotton wool in a funnel and push it a little
run about 100ml or till it is clear
then add back to the funnel

Just my 2 cent's worth
I'd find a readily available, cheap filter screen and build a simple and cheap filter system around it.
I'd also buy a couple filters with different micron ratings to see what works best.
