Re: i want to go electric
FreeMountainHermit so maybe my wording was bad on that
lets try it again
the first still i build was before i did enough research and did a few google searches and went at it (wasnt a good idea) after coming here and doing alot of research i figured out what was best for my situation. but i had to start at the beginning and learn the basics
i want to do the same with going to electric i want learn everything i can before i start and what ive been reading is about doing not why and what is what. i could go get a dimmer switch a heating element and a power cord and wire it all together but i dont think that would be the best idea

Re: i want to go electric
newbie1982, research is a good thing and preached here constantly... It sounds like you fell into the piss poor methodology that too many novices fall into... You found just enough information to appease yourself, and perhaps make yourself dangerous, and then you stopped doing any further research... Then, when you have another question, you come and ask for advice before doing any new research... Happens all the time and pisses me off to no end... Can't say what others feel but they should feel the same way...
The long and short of it is that if you had done ALL of the research from the get go you wouldn't be where you are right now... But you didn't... So here we are... All that being said I must commend you on taking the initiative to do more research... And by that I hope it is actual research rather than merely searching for an answer...
This post is in no way intended to be disparaging, no matter what some members may attempt to imply... It is simply to state the facts as they have been presented in hopes that other novices who stumble upon this topic will take heed and put forth enough effort to be fully versed in ALL aspects of this hobby, not just take what they need right now and say to hell with the rest... Just because you don't need to know something today doesn't mean you should wait until later to learn it... That's not how we were taught in school and it isn't a good way to live life... Know what you need to know before you need to know it... Soak up knowledge like a sponge... I know a lot of crap that I'll probably never need to put to use in my life but I know it anyway and even if it doesn't help me it might help someone else at some point... And I'm referring to life in general, not just this fine craft...
I just built another small electric rig and may start on yet another tomorrow... Why...??? Because I can... And because I like building just as much as I like distilling... Study up and if you still have questions we'll have answers...

Re: i want to go electric
Honestly the best most simple to understand wright up I've ever seen was on another forum. I believe It was done by Froto on the still dragon forum. I generally don't send folks over to other forums but it's a damn easy to understand thread. If you cant find it over there just ask and I'm sure someone will point it out to you.
Ideas are like rabbits. You get a couple and learn how to handle them, and pretty soon you have a dozen. John Steinbeck

Re: i want to go electric
Personally having gone through it all and remembering how confusing it can be, I am perfectly willing to point people to the threads I've personally found most helpful. That's not to say you don't need to do your due diligence but I know it can be pretty hard to sort through it all.
This one by Bellybuster was tremendously helpful
http://ww.homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=36347" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
So was this one by Pyewacket
http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... =2&t=39820
and as far as controllers, Jimbo's thread is good for SCR's
http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... =2&t=43456
and I think my own controller thread in my signature is pretty good at showing how to make a simple SSR but there are some mistakes that happened and you need to read the whole thing to understand what they are plus the technology of these controllers evolves very quickly.

Re: i want to go electric
A good place to start is this Forum's Sub Forum "Related Electric Accessories". Several excellent threads by members have been written (Jimbo's come to mind).
As an aside, I made that move a couple of months ago and are very pleased and wish I did it years ago.
Good luch,
BG
