My First run and Safety Question

Post by Will83 »

I am totally new to the distillation world. I got my first still at the end of last month and distilled my first batch. I purchased a T500 5 Gallon reflux still. Please don't laugh at me to much, but my first mash was 3 gallons of 100% no preservatives added apple juice, 1 gallon of water and "ABOUT" two pounds of sugar. My starting gravity was 1.10 and my ending gravity was around or approximately .98. I used Redstar Yeast. I started my run and threw out the first 300 + ML. I collected about half a gallon of spirts then diluted it down to 50% alcohol. I was still scared there might be methanol in my liquor, I did a burn test and it was blue. I have read that the burn test is bull-crap and others swear by it. I dropped it down to 40% and redistilled it. I threw our another 150 ML off the beginning of the run. Not top shelf liquor by any means :lolno: but me and my wife enjoyed it. Iv have read and read and read but i see different information on the internet about the foreshots / heads. I am about to brew another batch this weekend. I have a 5 gallon mash going. Its 5 gallons of water to 5 lbs. of sugar and one packet of Turbo Yeast. Can anyone tell me or guide me in the right direction on how to ensure safe brewing habits and how much per Gallon to throw out for the foreshots. Iv read and its says 50ML per gallon. I just want to ensure safety for myself and anyone else that try's my spirts. Thankyou!.

hi, the answers you seek are all here. have a look at kiwistiller's guide to cuts, that will up your game considerably. as for the methanol, well there is a plethora of information on the forums to ease your mind...but the first clue is the cuts.

happy reading!

+1 on that thread cob. It should be in the novice section.
It seems that discussions about alcohol percentage out of your still are remarkably similar to the MPG of your truck.
