my first attempt at "milling"

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.
Pics are VERY welcome, we drool over pretty copper 8)

my first attempt at "milling"

Post by sadie33 »

I am making my first honey bear bourbon. I ordered all my malted grains on line (milled), but got my flaked corn at my farm store. I was surprised at how large the corn was. It was a mix of large corn and like a meal. I measured out my 5 lbs in 2 batches. I shook the bowl back and forth and the meal settled to the bottom while the larger corn came to the top. I scooped off the large pieces of corn and pulsed them in my food processor till they were smaller.

I didn't want to make it into a flour or meal, just smaller than what it was for better conversion.

here are some pictures. The first is how it looked right out of the bag, you can see the meal and the large pieces of corn. The next picture is after I shook it back and forth, you can see the larger pieces on top and the last picture is what I ended up with, smaller pieces of flaked corn with a bit of meal.

woops, just went to read the honey bear burbon recipe again and saw it is 7 lbs of cracked corn or 5 lbs corn meal. I will "grind" up 2 more lbs of the flaked corn. And I JUST finished cleaning up everything!! Oh well.

The smaller/finer you can get the corn the better for conversion. If you gel it propper filtration will be.... okay. Corn can be difficult to filter but you will loose more potential to crush than to filtration.

Thanks. I figured I would start with this and see how it is to filter, then try a finer grind for both my corn and my other grains.

If I really like the honey bear bourbon, which I think I will, I am planning to buy a mill. Looking into different kinds now. This time I just threw it in my Ninja food processor. Not sure I can get away with that too many times before destroying the blades. :problem:
