What in the world kind of condenser is this?

Post by 00Buck »

Tonight me and my old dad were watching an old DVD he had of a man who used to make a little drink. I saw this rig and Ive never seen anything like it before. Im assuming theres a worm somewhere in there but the design is something else. Thats some backwoods engineering if I ever seen it

Some kind of worm I think.. funny how there is an internal sleeve.
Maybe someone here will know for sure.

It beats all I ever seen. Ive run a worm plenty. That looks like a worm barrel to me but the design is something else. I paused and looked and could never make no coils out

In my neck of the woods, that's called a tin-can condenser.

Make two cylinders out of copper sheet of slightly different diameter and solder the edges together.
Solder on tubing for an inlet and drain.

Interesting design Shady, that would work well.

I reckon my pea brain still dont understand the function even with the diagram. I feel plum stupid cause I work with metal for a living

It's not a new idea. This was in "The Distiller" by Harrison Hall 1818

I'm guessing the logic is to make the boiler, lye arm and condenser out of copper sheet.
Instead of getting tubing and trying to wind a worm.
A tin-can condenser has lots of surface area and slow vapor speed.
Plus buying copper sheet that can be used for roofing draws less attention than big diameter tubing for a worm. :ewink:

Ill be damned. That makes more sense seeing it that way for sure. I'm trying to figure out the vapor path in that thing. The diagram looks like its just from the inlet side but yonder side connects to the dick too. I can see that's two separate tubes but I don't see where they connect either. It looks closed off except the inlet side

I remember seeing that design on here several years ago and a discussion about it but buggered if I can remember where .
That pic zach posted jogged my memory .

Ok this makes sense now. I couldn't make head or tails of that other drawing

I posted something similar in 2020. At that time I speculated that it cooled milk but now I think different, thanks to Shady.
