Boiling chips are any material placed into a boiler that even out the boiling and prevent surging by preventing superheating of the liquid. Boiling chips have jagged edges which serve as locations for bubbles to form. Any material that has jagged edges, will not corrode in the boiler, and will not contaminate the wash can serve as a boiling chip.
