Re: when you over oak.....
Yeah I tasted it just to see what flavor had happened already. Just tiny sips that didn't even hit my throat. Because the color changed dramatically I just wanted to see if the flavor followed. I know it takes a while it just seemed really really strong in oak flavor.

when you over oak.....
Over oaking. My first two runs were a BW and sweet feed. I finally bought some med toast French oak chips. I took a couple pints and two quarts of likker (both runs) and proofed down to 60%. I put various amounts of chips in each container. Some pure vanilla extract in one. A partial vanilla bean in...

Re: sweetfeed whisky
Im going to be making around a 40 - 50 gallon batch of this very soon. I decided to try the Prestige WD With Ag Yeast. Seems like somewhere in all this I remember KS saying he used 1 packet of it in his 30 gallon batchs? according to the website I bought the yeast from it says 1 packet per 25 liter...

I too stripped my last 20 gal in two 10 gal runs Sunday night. I felt the flu was coming so I figured I'd better get it out if the fermenter that it's been in for a week and a half over being dry. I have about 4-4.5 gal for a spirit run. I gotta say the last 10 gal I pulled out of the fermenter sme...

Re: Winter mash suggestions for temp stability?
I just used a completely submersible fish tank heater. Not a cheap one. Rated for way larger than my fermenter so it wouldn't have to struggle. Worked like a charm.

Re running my BW which was my first ever wash. Diluted and kept two quarts. Tastes good mixed but not so hot on its own. Had that BW Furst run through pot still taste some of you have told me about. This Re running is producing a great product. Collecting in 300ml increments. Filling jar 10 and stil...

Re: 1 gallon mash recipes
My intention was to start with a pressure cooker design. Then I thought screw that I will go with a 30 qt stock pot. Then I said no. Too much dicking around with a mixing bowl lid, attaching a column, ect.... So I went 15.5 gal keg. Extremely glad I did this. Unless you live in an apartment that is ...

Way better product! Told ya!! Haha glad ya had a good run I usually air out for a day or two and make my cuts. I almost always get 15-16 200ml out of a run, single strip and adding feints from previous run. Keeping jar 4 which is 82% to 12 which it usually around 58% slightly into the tails. Then w...

Re: sweetfeed whisky
So after my first time with this recipe which is only my second wash ever here are some impressions. 1) doing a strip/spirit run is essential IMHO Spirit run product is wayyyyyy better even at high proof. 2) on the strip run I did get one jar in the middle that actually smelled like oats, had an org...

Re: Running today should be interesting
Went well. Have a small propane bullet heater I fired up. Tarped off a section of my workshop. Was pretty warm. Stripped 10 gal then recharged and did a spirit run of just under 2 gal. Collected in 200ml increments since there was so little going in. Have 20 gal left to strip. Going to strip it all ...

Re: sweetfeed whisky
Normal in a stripping run . You are pushing it hard to get it done . Smearing is to be expected . Pull fores and then smear it down to 20% or so . Save enough strips (low wines ) to make it worth while to do a spirit run . What you got sounds reasonable for a 10 gallon strip run . Thanks truck. Gue...

Ok what an I missing? I'm stripping 10 gal. Just filled pint #9 and I'm already into fusel oils and tails? Wtf? I ended up with a gallon and a half or maybe a touch more. I mixed it all together and I don't even need to dilute it because it's right on 40%. Now I have to run this little in my 15 gal ...

Stripping 10 gal now. Jars are filling up pretty fast. Only running about 50%abv though. Soon as I get to 20% I'm going to shut it down, dilute it and recharge.

Re: sweetfeed whisky
Ledyard, seems that you run a lot faster than I do. I have a five gallon boiler - usually charged with 4 to 4.5 gallons. It takes me about 2 hours for a stripping run and closer to 5 hours for a spirit run. That includes a 1 hour heat up time. But, I'm running a max of 1375W (electric). I run the c...

Storing diluted feints
I know not to store anything with any real proof in plastic. But If I dilute my BW that I am running a second time to 40% and store it in a 5 gal water bottle it will be fine will it not? I'm basing the thought on that you can buy stuff like garbage Southern Comfort 100 proof in plastic pint bottles...

Re: sweetfeed whisky
Ledyard, keep in mind too that a spirit run takes 2 or 3 times longer to run than a stripping run. So, if time is a consideration, you might want to do the spirit runs in smaller batches. Good luck with it. Looks like you got some nice wash there. S-C Yeah I was considering that. Plus the last time...

Re: sweetfeed whisky
Some molasses have oils added to them. So they will pour good. Some feeds have some oils added to them. It shouldn't be a problem. May even act as a defoamer. A good hot water rinse should be all that's needed. Well I guess my keg will have to come in the house to get rinsed. No hot water in the ga...

Hey I just remembered a question I had.... I racked off apx 11 gallons to let clear today. I noticed there was a slight oily film on the top. Is this normal? I don't remember reading about anything like this? Misc ingredients in the sweetfeed I assumed. To the touch it is a bit filmy. This wont be ...
