I’d also be interested estill- I was thinking Arduino as a brain instead of a pi, with roughly similar goals.

Re: Fog's Controller Project

Just to put my input in - if you had more sensors, you could check for things like if the column temp value is over some thing and the coolant temp is under some thing, shut off the element ?

Re: just wondering...

Billy, It sounds like you like to handle your bucket (or 10) of sloppy, sticky corn several times throughout the mash process. ss Just one bucket - 5 lbs - just looking for a method that only involves my time and not my money. I can get cracked corn for free -- $0 -- so if I spend 8 hours of my tim...

Re: just wondering...

Sadly no mill. Anyone ever tried heating in a slow cooker ? I read a steamer was involved at some point. What about... start with a cold water rinse, move to a steamer to soften the kernel up, then to maybe a soak in backset, then a slower cooker and finally to a pot ? Or something like that. A pers...

Re: just wondering...

corn was to cook I figured around 170. It's been in the middle of a long run of UJSSM so I assumed it was good n ready to be used. I got the end result I was looking for this time, but I'm worried about next run. No idea how actually get the corn to cook short with the hardware I've got to use. I'm ...

I started my all grain whiskey attempt today. I used roughly 7lbs of cracked corn from the bottom of my buckets of UJSSM along with 3lbs of flaked corn, 3lbs of flaked wheat and then 2lbs of crushed malted barley. Topped off with bakers yeast. First attempt I burned the corn. Tricky bit. Anything ov...

First ever all grain. 7lbs of cracked corn from the bottom of the bucket of UJSSM, 3lbs of flaked corn, 3lbs of flaked wheat, 2lbs of crushed malted distillers barley.
Hydrometer showed 1.070 before I added the bakers yeast. Here's to hoping.

I pulled 600mL off, as in a pot still pull. My thermometer under the top slant plate is stuck at 77.4 C. I put it back in full reflux/closed the valve. I'll let it sit right there for a bit while I keep reading.

Three buckets of about 5 gallons each of FFV in my still right now. How much foreshots should be removed ? If I was using the pot still column I’d take out 600mL - but that’s pot still land.

Re: uncle jesse's simple sour mash method

Close. I run a pair of buckets. Strip each bucket and throw that together to spirit run it. 2 buckets stripped runs gets me a little over 2 gallons, together gets me 4 to 4.5 gallons I guess. I add a bit of water to ensure I don't run my element dry. So the spirit run to me is: toss out 400mL for fo...

I don't see a place to just chat about stuff, so I'm posting here. I've got generation 11 fermenting in a pair of buckets and am sipping on what I've labelled on the jars as "Gen 'X'" - and I really actually like the stuff. As I sip on this I keep reading on how to transition to an AG ferm...

Please remove if this is somewhere else, but I couldn't for the life of me find it so created one of my own. Inside diameter of M grade 2" copper with inner circles based on outside dimensions of 1/2" copper.
Again, remove if this is a repeat.

Pony keg, so 7.75 gallon capacity stainless steel. I've built a 4' column of 2" copper and then built a boka head for it. Not done, no pictures ready at this point... The question is heating. I was initially thinking 2 elements running at 110/120 volt typical. Then looking closer at my electric...

Wow. First run wasn’t pretty but the second run ended with a fantastic batch of stuff - 1.5L of winderfulness

My original build is just fine, and it works. It's really lame. I have found a pony keg online near me, inexpensive enough that I can buy it with out having my wife serve me papers. My current still is a 20L crock pot, that I fitted an 8L bowl to, that leads to a 24" long piece of 2" coppe...

Yes - same recipe in both - 5kg of molasses and 2kg of plain sugar. I thought of the bakers yeast but I have been told by my wife that fermenting is to happen in the basement, and with the current heat wave that’s be going on, the central air is running almost non stop meaning the basement is at mos...

Made up a yeast bomb out of 1 cup bakers yeast, 1/4 tsp citric acid, 1/4 tsp epsom salts, and a mixed container of goodness from a local brew supply shop (acid blend, nutrient blend and tanin) in a gallon of water. End result of a couple days of copper hunting, soldering, drilling, swearing. The heat source for now will have to be the BBQ burner, which makes it real awkward to use.
