Re: Unmalted rye question

thank you for chiming in. i have read a lot of your post on rye. I have read that a longer glucan rest would help unmalted rye. Is that true? I also have read that stirring it often would help break down the glucans but I don't know if that makes sense to me. Thank you for your contributions to this...

Unmalted rye question

Do I need to do a glucan rest when using unmalted rye? I have searched this topic on the forum but seem to get some saying yes and others saying no. I do a glucan rest when using malted rye and i believe it helps. I just purchased some unmalted rye and want see how the flavor profile differs using t...

Re: The Badmotivator Bain-Marie and Oak Barrel

Acfixer69. The main question in my last post is if there was mold in the barrel would it ruin the spirit? If i knew if there was mold in it, i would not have asked. How would i know if it had mold? I wrote Ben to ask him his thoughts on the subject and that is when I learned about his accident. His ...

Re: The Badmotivator Bain-Marie and Oak Barrel

I bought a badmotivator back at the end of April. I filled it with water when i got it. It took me longer to fill it than I thought it would. I just filled it last night. i read about possible mold growing in a barrel. I looked at the water i poured out last night. There were a few things floating a...

Re: All grain question

….. I have not been collecting as far down as 10% i have been stopping around 30%. Not exactly sure why but i have read people cutting off at this point. Re: All grain question

if i ever get enough product to do a spirit run. I am kind of wondering here what your yields are like. If you've done 5 or 6 stripping runs and still don't have enough for a spirit run I am wondering a bit about your conversion or whether you're collecting enough of the alcohol off your stripping ...

Re: All grain question

You will know if it pukes. You can hear it starting to gurgle as the foam is coming up the column. Corrected by killing it reducing heat may get you some wash color in the first jar that should clear on the rest of the jars. If left uncorrected, or let go too long, get the mop bucket. What was your...

Re: All grain question

I did a clean out run with water in vinegar about 5 months ago before i used it again. I am running a 15.5 gallon keg with a 2 x 24 in riser connected to a 3 foot liebig condenser. Everything is copper. The fermentation was very milky almost yellow looking as pretty much all my all grains have been....

Re: All grain question

My AG stripping runs tend to end up a little cloudy. Partly because I strip down to around 25%, partly because I sometimes run a ltitle too hot, too early and get some puking. It all clears up nicely during the spirit run ("strip spirit protocol" just means to strip washes, generally fast...

Are you pot or reflux? Assuming Pot. Do you have new copper in the still anywhere? Are you following the strip spirit protocol? And if so is this your first run (strip) or your spirit run? [/quote] Yes, Pot still. No, I am using a column over keg and the column is about 12 years old. I am not sure w...

So I have run probably 5 or 6 all grain mash now. I have done HBB a few times and last night I did a Dumor 6 grain scratch with malter barley. Every time i have run an all grain my spirit comes out a bit cloudy. I want to say purplish / blue tint but nothing like i have seen people post very blue. A...

Whole or cracked corn

So tractor supply is about the only place near me to buy corn. Would you buy whole corn and grind it or cracked corn and just grind it finer? I wasn't sure if there was any benefit one way or the other. Plan on making HBB.

thanks for any assistance

Re: Paw Paw Recipes?

Did anyone ever try this? Our property in Arkansas has tons of pawpaw trees. I'll have to wait till the fall when the fruit gets ripe. I have never made a brandy but i was thinking this would be very similar to making banana. The fruit is very similar to mango. The skin and seeds contain toxins so i...

Re: all grain question

I am using for the first time Daddy yeast and except for the corn which i milled more than cracked but less than powder the other grains were just cracked. but from straining it. the cloudy was mostly corn mush. But I did not have any issues with scorching and i had my heat on as high as it would go...

Jonny - that was the one that i siphoned off the grain. I got another 6 gallons from squeezing the grain. and at least 1 gallon of it was cloudy as hell like that. I made 12 gallons hoping to get 10. I got 10 but hell at least 2 of them were cloudy as hell.

Re: all grain question

what type of temperature does it take to cold crash? my lash mash had at least 2 inches of the trub on the bottom after 2 weeks of sitting. I hand strained 20 lbs of grains and ended up with 5 gallons of mash and the bottom 6 inches was just like the above photo.

Re: all grain question

My last stripping run I ran all the mash from my last HBB. The bottom was very cloudy but not much sediment. Poto attached showing how cloudy the bottom of the carboy was. I strained it as I put in my boiler. The run came out a bit cloudy. I was thinking this was from running hot and fast. The produ...

It has only been 2 days. I just googled cold crashing and i don't believe i have the space to do this.

i would hate to scorch the product as i have a decent amount of time and money into it.

currently running a 2 foot 2 inch column that clamps on the top. At this point i do not plan on upgrading. was hoping to have to cut as few holes in the keg as possible. Yes the keg is stainless steel.

What do you need to solder into the hole?

Yes I am sorry for all the newby questions. i was just trying to figure out if it is possible or feasible before i do all the research needed.

And “brewing in a bag” will certainly affect the efficiency of conversion/extraction of the sugars. And corn is especially sensitive to this because you need good exposure of the corn to the active enzymes (carried in the liquid/wort). [/quote SS. I don't understand how brewing in a bag effects the...

I ground the corn pretty fine. the other grains i just used how they came in the mail. they were crushed.

How well did you mill your grains before mashing? Grind texture will affect extract efficiency too.

First all grain attempt.

So yesterday I doubled the grain bill of HBB but decided to do it in my kettle in a bag to get the most conversion. So I started with 14 lbs of corn etc. A iodine test showed with a full conversion, but my SG was just a big over 1.04 I was hoping for higher since I kept the corn at 190 for 1.5 hours...

Re: Spirit Run

15 gallon spirit run charge in my still equals approximately 20 mason jars then strip the rest. Hearts yield is about 2-2.5g @ 120’ish proof depending on the charge. I typically choose some heads and tails for my feints which comes to approximately three gallons. Throw some oak in that carboy and s...
