Secret men's business.

Post by blanikdog »

Seeing as there are a lot of blokes in here I thought I'd pass on some interesting stuff for the more elderly.

I've been feeling like shit for quite a few years now and I put it down to my cancer. The cancer has gone - for the time being anyway - after treatment but I still have no motivation, no stamina, no strength, weak muscles and generally feel like shit still. I decided to see a new GP rather than the 'teenage', fresh out of med school, wannabe 'gods' serving their apprenticship. This new gp is an old (late fifty) bugger who suggested that my testosterone level could be very low. I'm waithing on the test results.

Seems that as we get older we lose testosterone production that we need as males for many other functions, not just for fucking. So, if you feel crook and are over forty, I'd suggest that you have your GP arrange a blood test for Testosterone Deficiency.

In fact, even if you don't feel crook, it may be a good idea. Trouble with us blokes is that we just don't have the regular check ups that women have. Maybe that's why they outlive and out fuck us. :)

Your on the money there Blanik. I work in healthcare and generally, women take much better care of themselves than the guys. A typical guy want go to a doctor till something is wrong.

Glad to hear the cancer is at bay for the time being. Hopefully you can find a therapy that will get you feeling more like "normal". It sucks when you feel like shit everyday. Thanks for having the gumption to post on this, a relevant topic for the "blokes".

Never heard of this deficiency; may as well add it to my ever growing list of deficiencies. All kidding aside, thanks blanik, I'm over due for a check up and will ask about this. I have been feeling a bit like how you described it. bd.

It's amazing how many blokes don't get regular checkups. Once you hit 50 it's got to be a regular once a year routine.

I always get a full physical and get checked for diabetes, prostate, cholesterol and cancer markers. I never got my testosterone checked until a few years ago, and like BD, I was feeling like shit. Always tired, no energy, no motivation to do much at all. Less energy = less movement = weight gain. Now I'm overweight and as slow as molasses in a snowstorm. After a while you tend to accept it as "gettin' old. - Pigs arse, get yourself checked. Most likely your testosterone level is too low.

No wonder women these days are latching on to these young bucks. They got more testosterone than a bull elephant.

I have to agree with you BD on the fact that we men don't get all the checkups we need. I only go to the quacks when I'm in dire need and that ain't often. They don't usually like to listen to what I tell them, and then I don't like to listen to them either.

But I have to disagree with you on the last point,,,

most men die before their wives, because they want to. :D

My buddy was diagnosed with testicular cancer some years ago and ended up having both testicles removed... Considering other health issues he had, an extreme case of guillain barre syndrome for one, the doctors must have assumed that their removal was a non-issue as they didn't think he'd survive very long... He somewhat recovered and started going to the gym five days a week yet wasn't bulking up and his joints were deteriorating rapidly...

Being as I went with him to all of his doctors appointments I had him mention during a cancer treatment center follow up visit that they might want to check his testosterone level... We were sent to a local lab for testing and it was found that he only had 1% of a healthy mans testosterone - because he had no testicles to trigger production... He now receives supplemental injections...

Unfortunately, by the time the problem was discovered his ankles had deteriorated to a point where he now requires braces and medication... He has never fully recovered from the guillain barre syndrome and has virtually no sensory perception... As an example, If he closes his eyes he will fall to the floor... This is partially why he never knew he was doing damage to himself through exercise...

Shit oh dear, as long as you don't feel both hands on your shoulder it's still a good day.

On a more serious note this shit is no fucking joke. Get checked once a year or end up with out your ability or worse dead. I'm only 33 and it's a problem so don't think because your Yong it can't happen.

I had my first finger check 10 years ago when I hit 40. Knowing I was going to be sitting in the examing room waiting for the Dr for a while. I went there with a few candles and a bottle of wine and glasses. Figured I could make the Dr as uncomfortable as I was. When Doc walked in he almost pissed his pants laughing. Only problem was he called in the whole staff to see the setup. So walking out everyone knew what I was there for including I think a few patients in the waiting room. Felt like Peter on Family Guy

blanikdog thanks for sharing. Theres so much at stake and multiple reasons for feeling shit.

Despite all the modern wizardry, doctors these days work the system to maximize income. It comes down to 'your money or your life'. Insurance is a huge part of the system. Here in Oz I went for my first checkup at the age of 59. All OK except for burning off skin stuff and a suspicious mole on my eyebrow.

That's 1 consult.
2nd Consult was to get a core-sample of the mole taken for testing.
3rd Consult was to review the result of core sample; probably OK but cut it out to be sure.
4th Consult (Specialist) was supposed to be 'cut it out', but no, 'please fill in this form' same as the previous form filled in.
5th Consult (Specialist) was actually cutting it out. I was a piece of meat on the table while the Sp joked with the nurses. About 15mins and 2 stitches.
6th Consult - remove stitches (nice nurse).
7th Consult was the GP again to say that after further testing the cut-out piece is benighn. No worries, I'm cosmetically better now and at least two doktors got another month repayment for a Porche, mansion, and private schoolin for the kids.

I would have much preferred the GP to say on the first consult, 'Here, this looks suspicious, I'll cut it out right now and we'll be done with it'. He would then have my fullest respect. No wonder men are suspicious of dokters.

Definately do your own research, explore alternatives, and take note of findings like blanikdog has given. Also learn the system and throw it back at them.

Sorry, I'm biased. It all started when a dokter held me by the feet and slapped my bottom. Next was circumcision without anesthetic. And I'm not getting a free swineflu shot until the dust has settled.

Im with you on this one BD.

I was 29 when I had my first heart attack. I had been living a very active and healthy life and then I took a desk job. It basically snowed in my veins at that point. Next thing I know Im in the hospital with all kinds of folks around me argueing about if I was too young to have a heart attack. Lucky for me, my Doc shut em up. Two hours later I was layin on a table with a catheter up my leg, looking at a 50% and a 90% blockage in my heart. Another hour later I was stented and ready to go. I was "lucky " enough to have pnuemonia at the time so the fluid buildup in my chest staved off any damage to my heart.
Six months later the 50% blockage flopped over and made a 95% dam and I had to do it all over again.

Havent had one since, but I can sure vouch for the value of listening to your body and hearing when it says something could be better.

Guys, pay attention to those little things. They add up after a while. If you dont feel well, ask your Doc if there is something you can do.

Folks might be happy to have you around a bit longer.

Same is true if you notice that someone you care for looks a little different than usual. My brother in law dropped dead at 39, leaving a wife and three little ones. After he died, my other brother in law and me were talking and he remembered one time the brother in law that died was huffing and puffing out of breath after carrying a couple of things down some stairs over Christmas. This guy was big and solid and a commercial plumber by trade. That was a sign. Now when we look back at some photos from around the time he died, he looked ashen and grey, not at all his usual healthy looking self. Another ominous sign of what was to come. Almost 5 years later and it still haunts me that we all missed the signs. bd.

What a time to bring all this up. I'm due for my yearly in 3 hours.

I ain't takin' a digit in the derriere this time. They can do a blood test for prostate now. I swear last time he used Vicks Vaporub instead of KY.

But I did thank him for not goin' the squirrel grip without telling me first.

Just turned 40 in Jan. I've been on blood pressure med for 8 yrs. and my triglysoride are high got another pill for that last year. It is hard to work out with little time on our hands. If I could get a lot of sht out of my shop I could work out while i distill. I keep a couple of 20 lb weights at the office just to pick up and stretch and through a little weight while I have some down time.

The doc always says, loose weight, exercise and eat healthier along with stop drinking and quit smoking cigars. I just try to stay in moderation.

My wifes cousin had a heart attack @ 36 but it ran in his family his twin brother had heart surgery 6 mnths after. the twin was in the same shape he is lucky to find out before anything happen. I have 3 girls and i do want to see them grow up. It has to be a lifestyle change and a commitment to stay healthy. Good luck to all.

I read about goldenpond and it brought tears to my eyes.

I hate death and funerals too. My dad died when i was eight and i know how hard it is to grow up without one. It sucks and i don't want to put my children in my shoes

I'm 37 and have the ole finger trick to look forward to in the near future. I'm lucky, at least my GP is a good looking young woman.

All joking aside, Man up gents, take a finger one a year to keep those danglers healthy. Once you prostate is gone all the viagra in the world won't make your column work...time for schrader valve and a bicycle pump. To me it's the lesser of 2 evils.

Now if your Doc dresses better then the nurses, talks with a light soft voice, has perfectly trimmed hair/beard and can't wait for your next "exam"....change doctors. LOL

I have read that the blood test, though valuable, misses a lot of cases too.

I ask for the finger, too.

Fortunately my man has slim fingers...
