Well I had my first attempt at soldering 4" Type L Copper pipe today...... Could not believe how much heat it took to get the solder to flow. I ended up sacrificing two of my sight glass lenses to the solder gods. I rigged up each sight glass with the glass and tri-clamp to act a a heat sink to keep the temperature down on my not-so-easy flange. I also added about 3 table spoons of water to each sight glass and soldered them face down. Here are the results.....

Dan,
is that an outward sort of pursed edge around the perimeter of the hole on the column wall? Where the sight glass branch gets installed.. (did I say that right?).

Maybe just an optical illusion? Would be awesome if it where so.
If so,,,,how the hell did you do that??

LWTCS,

The 2"pipe that I used to make the sight glass is inserted into the 2_1/8" holes I drilled in the column body. I inserted all five sight glasses after they were cleaned really well and fluxed. then I laid the column down with the sight glasses facing down and supported the column body with two pieces of wood cut to the right dimension so that the sight glasses only went into the flute the depth of the 4" wall thickness. I did not want solder running into the inside of the 4" column as that would be a real pain to clean out. When you put the heat to the column body the solder is sucked up into the joint. Then you can clean up your mess on the outside instead of inside the pipe. I hope that answers your question.

Although it's a bit late now, you will find it easier to place the fitting onto the blank tube, apply heat to the tube and outside of the fitting, and apply the solder through the sight glass fitting to the inside of the joint. When all of the fittings are solder in position, drill the hole through the fitting, and then clean up flush using a router bit in a Dremmel tool.

OD,

It is a bit late but i do see how your method would work great!! I took my 4_1/8" hole saw back and bought the 4" version to cut my sight glasses with and bought the 2_1/8" hole saw for the column body holes. I guess it just goes to show that there is definitely a very creative element to building a flute and every artist may use the same tools and come up with a very different result. Thank you for your advice and experience and for sharing it with others...

Well it has been awhile so here is a little progress report..... Got some parts cut the lazy way!! Now I need to start drilling the 182 perforations in each plate!! Dephlagmater will be 6" inside an 8" section of 4" pipe with a stumpy clone 2" vapor takeoff going to a 3" seven tube shotgun product condenser that is 14" tall with a 12" shotgun in it.

Nice work, dan... That equipment sure beats using tin snips and a hand drill like some builders have struggled with...

Well some times you can't beat a hand drill and some sandpaper to help you fine tune some parts......

Oh I can feel the love all right but it is my hands, arms and shoulders that I can feel the most right now. Unlike most of you guys this is my first build and I don't have any UJSSM to dull the pain. Can't wait to fire this thing up when it is done. Hope I don't run out of Advil before I do finish. I don't know how Kentucky Shinner can sell these so cheap with all the time it takes to build them!! :wtf: :wtf:

I'm sure he will appreciate that observation Dan. Begs the question,,,,,how much would you pay your self to build these things?.... 70-80 bucks an hour in my area and that only works if you got work waiting for you......
