That downcomer doesn't have enough trap to hold back the vapor :(

Hmmm I'm seeing a trend here, was wondering that myself. Will put the plate in my bubbler and do some testing, only way to find out.

Not exactly the same at all. Looking at the tip off on the horizontal section there is a liquid level lower then the bend in the elbow IE no trap and when the vapor is screaming through there will not work. Just letting a flag out before the solder hits the copper. Not trying to be an engineer but looking at your liquid level on the plate the trap is going to be much deeper. Just advise its your show

Thanks for the input mate, I'm not gunna test that trap now, waist of gas and time, just gunna put 2x 90's for the trap.

That J-trap would have worked if you had soldered a small piece of copper into a slot so that vapor couldn't travel over the liquid into the down tube... A vapor dam extending down ~1/2 - 2/3 would do the trick... It would still be less efficient when the plates are first filling but would eventually operate properly...

Cheers rad, good idea, would fix it!. I'll just stick with a standard j trap though. I waist to much time thinking up new shit when tried and true things work fine.

Sacrificial run done, wasn't real happy with how it ran, plate kept collapsing, will hopefully do some more testing this weekend.

Doing a first complete run, 44" packed with scoria about 20mm diameter pieces. Interesting to see how it runs with the large hole in the top, lots of pulsating!, got a straight birdwatchers going. it's running a little fast in the vid, has stabilized now and refluxing for a while, fingers crossed. Sounds like a tractor

Seemed to run well, single run at 3.3lph at 90%. ABV was lower than I was hoping but it was very clean so far, will let it air for a day or two and do some tasting. If I can get a nice neutral type from.a.single run my still building is finished

After resting a week, had a taste test tonight, the missus is an aromatherapist and has a nose like a blood hound, gave her a smell and she said she could smell nothing!. Taste is pretty much nothing too. So, I've achieved what I wanted, a neutral to suit me in a single run :D . Next mission is a rum through it with either reduced packing or column height disabling. then I'll have all I need, a still for all my needs with minimal fuss.

Heya Googe, do I see that right? Your def is a single pipe path? Is it able to knock down everything?

Yeah mate, single tube. It's at it's limit at a bit over 3lph, I'll stick a scrubber in it next run and see what happens. Wish I'd made the deflag just a little longer cause I reckon a could get much more than 3 lph.

I see 4" packed columns discussed and arguments about its to big re packing. Use the right packing and no issues.

I came across mention of the amphoria society pda1/2 and ever since I've been considering doing a 4" LM. Seems like a pretty versatile rig
