hello all i read some ware in here that brass has lead but i cant find the post that i read i searhed with all different words with no luck and i have to small fitting in my pot still do i have to clean them as theres two of them and if so how can i clean them and with what

There's a thread somewhere that could be included that relates to the cleaning copper question under this. not too long ago someone did some side by side cleaning experiments with photos and a whole stack of solutions. I was trying to find it but gave up?
Would certainly be of interest to those who'd like their shiny new still to be...well,... shiny...

I used this treatment and it worked really well
Cleaning Brass
Some brewers use brass fittings in conjunction with their wort chillers or other brewing equipment and are concerned about the lead that is present in brass alloys. A solution of two parts white vinegar to one part hydrogen peroxide (common 3% solution) will remove tarnish and surface lead from brass parts when they are soaked for 5 minutes or less at room temperature. The brass will turn a buttery yellow color as it is cleaned. If the solution starts to turn green and the brass darkens, then the parts have been soaking too long and the copper in the brass is beginning to dissolve, exposing more lead. The solution has become contaminated and the part should be re-cleaned in a fresh solution.

Thanks for the solution mixture for cleaning brass. I havent been able to find copper needle valves yet, and was worried about the brass.
As a side note about 3% peroxide. I use this instead of bleach all of the time for cleaning and sanitizing. Bleach is a very harsh chemical...it is pretty much just chlorine. Have you ever smelt bleach in a doctors office? I know I never have. That is because they dont use it, they use peroxide to clean and sanitze. I know I am knew here, but I have read alot of postings about people using bleach as a cleaner. IMHO I suggest trying out the 3%.

That's real interesting about using the peroxide as a sanitiser, iv'e always used bleach.
In what proportion would ya mix it with water?
When i clean out a brewer, i scrub it out with dishwasher detergent and then rinse a couple times, fill with water to just above the tap and then add a splash of bleach. Use a brush to coat all the brewer and then seal up with lid and air lock till next time.

I just use a splash of peroxide about 1/4 cup or less in a 5 gallon bucket. Just like bleach a little bit goes a long way.
