drinking wash
i know this definitely is not recommended, but can you drink a fermented wash as is? right now i have no means of distilling my current wash. i know you cant filter out the foreshot, so i could be in for a nightmare of a hangover, but otherwise would i be ok? has anyone else ever done it? i just want to get some good use out of my first successful wash...

Re: drinking wash
let it settle/clear and it whould not be any different than beer/wine. I whould not drink anything with high nitrates or yeast still in it.

Re: drinking wash
Sure ya can.
What kinda wash?
Uncle Remus's recipe (or the like) has been consumed as sake a time or two.
Then theres the wines.
Now all bets are off if you want to try and enjoy a Gerber or the like.
I had some left over panella wash I was saving to charge my thumper on it's virgin run.
Clearing for weeks in the fridge. Man that smelled great.
Can't say I would have enjoyed it with a meal though.

Re: drinking wash
well i'm new to this and i have limited space so did a very small batch and it turned out quite well.
ingredients are as follows:
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup corn meal
1 1/2 liter purified water
yeast
its very similar to a UJSSM, however tweaked by me. how should i filter this? run it through a coffee filter?

I'd let it rest in the fridge for a week. With a batch that small you should have room.
Then I'd employ the coffee filter.

Re: drinking wash
not necessary but "clears" much faster if cool and the colder the faster, just a hour or so at 33f it will cleared.

Re: drinking wash
Not at all necessary.
But the coolness will help the suspended solids drop more quickly.
If you let it rest in the fridge for a couple of weeks the solids will sort of compress or compact themselves to the bottom of your vessel. Then you can pour away the liquid (with a steady hand. No glug glugging) and barely disturb the bottom cake.
This vessel works great as it allows for liquid/air transfer and you get no glug glugging.

Re: drinking wash
Last week I made the mistake of tasting my mash for three days
to see if the sugar was being converted,
and for the next few days my stomach bubbled and gurgled
and made me feel extreamly ill, blowing gas out of both ends!
I think it was the active yeast turning my guts into a mobile fermentor,
the only cure was original version of alka seltzer in water, Burp!

OldBoiler, it sounds like you either got a good dose of yeast or are more sensitive to yeast than most...
Remember, you can taste without swallowing...
Just remember to rinse...

Re: drinking wash
I have drunk wash before in a pinch, (don't ask), without filtering or settling, yeast and all, and never had any problems whatsoever aside from the taste. Although I've been told that I have a stomach of steel
Others might want to be careful though, especially if they have allergies or an easily upset stomach.
If you have digestive problems, kidney, or liver related issues, you shouldn't be drinking anything stronger than 5%(10 proof) or any alcohol at all.

Re: drinking wash
Well I've noticed that around the world, if it has alcohol in it, people will drink it.
Myself, I don't distill anything that I don't think I would drink in it's raw form. I always have a sip or two of a wash before I put it in the still to make sure it's ok. So far nothings gone wrong, (yet), but I've brewed quite a few things beer, wine, mead over the years so I've learned that cleanliness is key when fermenting and probably the most overlooked problem area when things go wrong.

Re: drinking wash
Wine is wash, so is beer. Difference is that the wine and beer makers go to extreme lengths to make their wash drinkable.
Home stillers don't care so much cos they will sort it out in the stillin. A stillin wash is not drinkable unless you do what the wine and beermakers do.

Re: drinking wash
I whould not say it was not drinkable, but not really enjoyable, my mash taste more like some kind of flat diet beer .
then when you make brandy that wash taste like some cheep wine, maybe something that you mite expect to find them drinking in a back ally.

god dang. maby im just being an asshole here, but if your wantin some advice on drinking jail house piss, go to the jail house. this is a distillers forum. we here (for the most part) are trying to hone in our skills on eather making stills or making swills. its good that you pulled off a good ferment, but its odvious to me that you were just trying to get the most ABV that you could from the cows tit.
sorry, i dident mean to offend,,, im usually not like that

Mr. Spooky, that was uncool, and quite uncalled for.

In my opinion, drinking your undistilled wash is not dangerouse, it wont taste good.
you could cold distill it Warning there are some who will not like these instructions.
it does work, I would not do it for large amounts, it takes to long and its not worth it.
instructions follow
let you wash settle for a few days
syphon off the clear liquid
put it in a bowl that fits into you cleaned out carbouy
seal up all the holes
put it out in the sun for a few days
the ethenol will condensate on the sides of the carbouy and dribble down to the bottom
now you have clear spirits at about 50%
use some of the calculators from tonys site to work out how much you have.
Just remember this method will not allow splits
for the amount your talking about... hardly worth the trouble.
taste it see if you like it.(I doubt you will)
good luck.

if he was to distill this in any way, form or fasion, he might get a shot glass full.
i could be wrong, and i hope that i am,, but given the sercomstances, this seems like just enough to hide in the closet from mom.

yes Mr spook, you may be right, but he / she is still showing an interest and maybe needs some gentle INFORMATIVE help, flameing a genuine question and gusing about thier intentions is not what this forum is about.

Give some one alcahol they get drunk...teach them to distill... you may get drunk too.

Re: drinking wash
The reason the drinking of wash is discouraged is because of the ingredients commonly used... Drink too much wash made using epsom salt or fertilizer and you may very well end up with the shits... Drink wash with some other ingredients and you could end up with internal burns... Hence, the broad consensus is to avoid drinking fermented wash unless you know what you are doing... And if you know what you are doing you wouldn't be asking whether or not it is okay to drink the wash... That should pretty much sum it up...

Why drink "wash" ? If you want to drink something not distilled, drink beer. Or wine. Made the right way, ofcourse. But to drink sugar wash? Why put yerself through that hell?

mississippimoon , if your truley interested in distilling, loosing a wash or two aint nothong to get upset about. everyone here started from somewhere. if you are truley interested in distilling ,start with a simple inexpensive pot still (thats all i got). there are alot of people here that are more than willing to help you, but first, you need to be willing to help yourself. if your working on a small scale, there are proven designs that are suted to fit any need.
pitch that wash out, get some beer, and set infrount of your computer for a few hours a night and make educated decisions,,, this will leed to questions that dont offend. if i can help in any way let me know and i will do my best.
good luck
