I usually stick to my tried and true recipe handed down to me by my great granddad.
Today I got to experimenting and decided to use a few Vitamin B1 Supplements in the wash.
Below is the rundown
(10) Gallons Water Total
(20 lbs) white cane sugar (inverted)
Couple campden tablets (kill off chlorine)
(4) B1 Supplemets
(1/2 cup) Bakers Yeast
Pitched yeast at 10:00 AM
Its now 4:59 PM and no activity yet.
Most washes are bubbling happily within the first hour or two.
Has anyone had any experiences using Vitamin B1 Supplements in their washes?
If so can ya elaborate, maybe give a few pointers.

Re: B1 Supplement Usage
I doubt that any of the B1 vitamins would cause a sluggish start... I'd be more concerned with the campden tablets... But I don't think that's the crux of the problem... If B1 vitamins are the only nutrient the yeast may start to autolyze due to a lack of proper nutrients for yeast viability... Using a B Complex would be better, but still not enough... You'll need an adequate amount of nutrients, especially for a wash with a potential 14% ABV... pH could also be a concern unless you have assured tat it is within the proper range...

Re: B1 Supplement Usage
thanks rad, i'll go grab some tom. paste
and some PH strips
I followed instructions on label of campden tablets, 1 tablet per 1 gallon of liquid equals approx 30 ppm free SO2
So i added 10 crushed tablets to 10 gallons. I may have created a toxic environment for my yeast.
I did pre-start my yeast. 1/4 cup in 1 quart of the wash mixture for about an hour, it had a fantastic head on it.
I then poured starter into the fermenting barrel and aerated vigorously.

ph is way down, so i'll bring it up, toss tom. paste and leave for 12 hours. Then toss more yeast if necessary.

Re: B1 Supplement Usage
Well its been right at 12 hours since I first added those campden tablets
since my last post i did the following
I brought the PH up
Added (2) 6 oz cans of Tom. Paste
redone the starter
Pitched the remaining yeast
So far things are looking on the up & up.
Wash has a decent head floating on top once again.
Before this run, I just made (4) 5 gallon batches at once in separate buckets.
Now I have a 30 Gallon barrel, So this is my first batch running more than 5 gallons in one container.
I also wanted to experiment a little. Maybe I should experiment with 1 gallon batches instead of 10 gallons.

I use "Berocca" tablets when fermenting honey - along with epsom salts and DAP and get a very good ferment. Honey is mainly sugar and has very little nutrient - same with sugar - and needs added nutrient. I add sodium met to kill the wild yeasts, dunno about clearing chlorine and add the starter a day or so later with no problems. Skip the sodium met next time and see what happens. You will still need the nutrients that tomato paste provides.

Re: B1 Supplement Usage
If your useing campden tabs to get rid of clorine 1 tab per 10 gallons with a little heat is plenty. That way you don't have to boil the watter just a little heat.
If you only useing 1 tab per 10 gallons there is no need to wait 24 hours. You only need to wait 24 hours if your useing campden tablets for their intended use. So basicly a low dose is ok for yeast a high dose is not.

Re: B1 Supplement Usage
yea, my mistake was following directions on back of campden
1 tablet per 1 gallon of water
but just in case, I'll probably discontinue all usage for washes
and use it only for wine making.
Thanks for the replies community

Re: B1 Supplement Usage
Well i checked my concoction last night and it was done fermenting.
I mixed this up Wednesday night and 3 days later its done.
The smell permeating from the extra bathroom is somewhat of diarrhea/dirty baby diapers.
Actually smells horrendous to me. I have to keep door closed and taped off the keep smell from traveling through the house.
The alcohol taste is very strong, strongest I've made so far.
But I have no hydrometer so i cant tell the specifics
I've never made a batch of wash that smells as this one smells.
Makes me consider taking it outside the house to the utility building
I'll let it set for a week to settle before i start running. I hope to get 1 + gallons.
