first condenser build with pics

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.
Pics are VERY welcome, we drool over pretty copper 8)

first condenser build with pics

Post by Djurmz »

I started distilling with a head I bought from brewhaus.com. I'm now building a new stripping head and VM column. The first step I decided on was building a condenser I could attach to both heads. I wanted a copper coil inside a PVC case that could handle any amount of distillate I could throw at it. Here is what I came up with:

My stripping head and VM column are both built with sanitary tri-clamp connections. I'll upload those pictures as they're built. The stripping head should be done in a week and I'm shooting for the VM column build by the end of January or so.

I hope the alcohol is going threw the copper, but the copper looks small for that.

+1

Also, don't be surprised if the heat expansion property differences of those dissimilar materials causes repeated leaks... There's a reason why you don't see more Copper/PVC condensers... But you just might get lucky...

I kow that I've mentioned this before, but I'll do it again.

One of the essential items to place in a pic is a scale of some sort so that we can get an idea of proportion ond size. A coin is no good because it isn't coins differ in size, and is more or less international but a cheap twelve inch wooden rule would work wonders. It's the archaeologist coming out in me. :)

I am guessing that is 3/8 tube. wrapped around 1.5 in pipe... od like 1.875? good for a pot still right? I like the idea but I worry it will leak. but if that is some good silicone RTV then I think I would trust it. let it set up forever though before putting "pressure" to it.

Poly-Vinyl-Chloride, anyone care for a sip of cyanide? +1 on the hope the distillate is inside the copper.
It is the very things that we think we know, that keep us from learning what we should know.

Yeah the booze would go thru the copper. It's just like Rudenoise's one about half way down the page here: http://homedistiller.org/equip/designs/thumper" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

The alcohol is going through the copper and coolant water throught the PVC pipe. I don't like my alcohol vapors to come in contact with the PVC, it seems like I read somewhere on this forum that plastic was bad...

I filled it with water after the sealant cured overnight and I'm leak free. I'm not sure what will happen under heat, but I'm confident that I can be leak free with a bit of experimentation. I'll update on my leak successes or failures.

The copper line is 3/8" O.D. I wrapped it around a 1.5" PVC pipe and enclosed it in a 3" PVC pipe.

Good advice on the ruler Blanik, I'll try and remember that next time.
