Volumetric Pipets.... Looky What I found.

Post by Mark Ducati »

I was reading the Q&W with Mentors and someone was asking about "over oaking" etc... A lot of these barrels have the bung-hole right on top, I thought one of these fits the bill perfectly:

We used to use these in Chemistry Class... this one is a 100ml Pipet for $18.95, you can get a 50ml one for $13.95 on http://www.amazon.com

Wine makers use a similar glass object to pull wine out of barrels... all you do is insert it into your hooch, put your finger over the end, it fills up, cover with your finger, take it out then release into your tasting glass... you can even suck on it like a straw if you're in a hurry..

I thought this would be good for pulling your wash out of you carbouy/keg to see if it still tasted sweet or pulling hooch out of a wooden barrel... for less than $20 bucks, its a neat item to compliment your alcohometer/hydrometer set up.

I actually do have quite a bit of glassware from an earlier hobby. No, not what you're thinking....the more "energetic" fun kind of hobby. :D

Consequently, I have a mini-lab worth of glassware including a 25ml pipette with a valved bulb.

Funny I never thought of it to pull off a tiny sample to dilute and try. :|

Thanks for sparking a neuron.

I was also thinking of trying to find a large 4-5L Erlenmyer Flask with a vacuum port.... rubber stopper + one of those ceramic filters, hook up a hose to a one of those waterbed filler/drainer attachments that hooks to any regular old faucet and you have a vacuum source from running water...

This might be a good way to quickly filter your wash before distilling?

Here's what I was talking about:

Hook up some tubing to the side of the flask, insert the filter into a rubber stopper that goes in the top of the flask... the other end of the suction tubing connects to the faucet attachment which when water forced through the attachment it pulls air from inside the flask thus pulling the liquid quickly through the above filter.

This is getting on the spendy side though... with a 5000ml flask and filter, you'll likely have $300 bucks into glassware...

Again, as mentioned in another topic, due to safety reason we don't do much with glass components... We've had several catastrophic failures recently which drives that fact home even further...

As for the pipets, some of us use a copper wine/spirit thief for attaining samples... Properly sized, they will hold enough spirits for an alcometer reading in a single capture...
