Hey there!

I'm a New Zealander, and I've just dived into the deep pool of home distillation!

I've just spent the last 3 or 4 hours getting totally lost in your forums. The amount of knowledge here is absolutely amazing! No doubt reading through all of this will keep me entertained for a few weeks to come!

Anyhow, I've very recently acquired my very first still, a 25L StillSpirits super reflux. Unfortunately I hadn't found this site before making my first wash and first distillation run. I made it using turbo sugar and a 3-day turbo yeast from my local homebrew shop. The end result was drinkable, but not in the least bit enjoyable =P

After talking to the guy I bought my still from, he suggested using just a plain sugar wash. So currently in my fermenter is a 25L wash of plain white sugar, and a higher quality, longer duration turbo yeast (I was drawn to it's name, "Triple-Distilled" =P).

Once this has finished fermenting and I've distilled it, I'm really looking forward to trying out the birdwatcher's sugar wash.

We have plenty of good alternatives to turbo washes in the Tried and True section, as you have already discovered... Eliminating the turbo greed also eliminates the extra work required to end up with good spirits... We have more than a few weeks worth of information here... And don't overlook the parent site...
