Canning Jars

Post by gholl3214 »

Hi,

I wasn't sure where to ask this but here goes. I just finished a nice run of All Bran and want to put some of it away with oak chips for aging. Is there an issue using canning jar lids? I don't know the composition of the gasket material. I'd hate to open it in a month or so and have it ruined.

Thanks,

G

I do this all the time and have'nt noticed anything bad. And you know, grannies have been useing these for 200 years with no bad results. Now with that said....I've only been at it for 2 years and have'nt kept any around THAT long, but it just makes sense that the rubber gasket is of nutral material so it just wont leach any off flavors in your hooch so I would'nt worry about it much.

One thing to consider is oaking is not usually, nor is storing, done as high ABV.... typically no more than 150 proof for aging and most store at 100 or less from what I can gather. That greatly reduces chances of leeching.

Thanks for the input. I diluted this batch down to 95 proof before setting aside. I also left about a 1/2" headroom to keep the liquid from direct contact with the gasket. Fortunately it's only a few pints but any waste is a shame.

Kept some fores in some reclaimed jelly jars. Can't recall how long but it definitely affected the structural integrity of the seals.

Felt and sounded kinda,,,, glued on when I last opened.

I get the black stuff on the lids sometimes while making milk kifer, water kifer, and kabouch tea (part of a diet upgrading to keep cancer from reoccurring). Wondering if its some mold or just the plating deteriorating? Would wine bottles with all natural cork (no binders) be good for hootch?
